Classic Car Overview

When it debuted for 1970, the Corvettes new LT-1 engine option (a high-output 350) received rave reviews for its powerful, free-revving nature and great soundtrack. Fortified with a solid-lifter, aggressive spec camshaft, this engine really came alive at higher rpm.

The LT-1 was offered through 1972. That last year is unique in that it was the only year that you could get air conditioning with the LT-1. In general, any LT-1 is a relatively rare car given that this option cost nearly $500 when the LS-5 454 option was around $300. A 1972 LT-1 with A/C is even more rare, with only 240 ever being built according to the Corvette Black Book.

On offer here is one of those unicorns -- a 1972 Corvette LT-1 with A/C. This incredible find is in beautiful condition and boasts the most prestigious awards in the classic Corvette world. Specifically, this handsome C3 has earned the NCRS Top Flight, Performance Verification and Duntov Award of Excellence awards, the latter being given only to the finest, most correct and best-running examples.

Although this is an older restoration and those impressive achievements occurred in the mid-1990s, the Corvette has always been very well cared for. As such, it still presents and drives very well. Look closely and youll note the Elkhart Green finish is still dazzling, as are the chrome bumpers and various other bright trim pieces. The underside and engine compartment are relatively clean, although a good detail would really make them shine if one so desired.

Slide behind the classic three-spoke Corvette wheel and you cant help but notice the amazing condition of the interior. The leather is supple with no cracks while the T top liners, door panels and carpeting are likewise in very fine shape. This LT-1 was loaded with options in addition to that potent engine and A/C. Highlights include power steering, power brakes, tilt/telescopic steering wheel AM/FM radio and the Custom interior trim (leather seating and wood-tone door panel accents).

With its chrome air cleaner and finned aluminum valve covers, the LT-1 has the eye candy to go along with its performance. This cars powertrain is numbers-matching apart from the carburetor and radiator, however the original units do go with the car. Fire up that solid-lifter small block and run it through the gears. Smooth and eager acceleration and an overall tight and solid feel characterizes the driving experience of this desirable C3. Of course, it sounds great in the process especially if you let the tach needle flirt with 6,000 rpm.

Speaking of tachs and rpm, serious C3 enthusiasts will know that for 1972, Corvettes equipped with both the LT-1 and A/C had an artificially lower redline on the tach face. Chevrolet changed the redline to 5,600 rpm (versus the non-A/C-equipped LT-1s 6,500 rpm) as the factory had concerns over the A/C belt being spun off at the higher rpm the LT-1 was easily capable of.

Whether wowing car show admirers or thrilling its pilot (and co-pilot) on an open country road, this very rare LT-1 is ready to provide miles of smiles.
