The Heavy Chevy Chevelle was marketed as a stripped down version of the SS which aimed to go fast and beat high cost insurance premiums. It was a performance package addition to the base model Chevelle, whereas the SS was a performance package addition to the Malibu.
The 402ci engine shares the same block with the legendary 396. The horsepower rating was lower due to insurance cost and because in 1972 the standard was changed from Gross HP to Net HP meaning the engine was fully dressed when tested.
