Classic Car Overview
Still every bit as captivating as it was when it debuted a full 55 years ago, this 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia can boast of a special history. This rarely seen VW product has been in the possession of just one owner over its considerable lifetime and during that span, it has obviously benefitted from consistent care, so its still well-positioned for plenty more driving enjoyment. Its dressed in yellow paint that closely mirrors the Saturn Yellow shade these cars were offered in when new. A lap around the car will confirm that there are no major blemishes in sight and, in fact, the paint would be taken to an even higher level after just a brief session with a detailer. The contrasting black vinyl top is in excellent shape, with its deep color intact and a nice tight fit to the steel below. Yep, this ones a looker.
When you climb inside and lower yourself into the drivers seat, youll be reminded of just how driver-centric and appealing the Karmann Ghias cockpits from this era really were. Sure, youll see some evidence of wear here and there inside these doors, which is not surprising, considering this is almost certainly the original upholstery, but as you glance around, youll find nothing inside the doors that would diminish your enthusiasm for taking this sporty ride out on the road as soon as you bring it home. The gauges are functional and surprisingly clear, and the added AM/FM/CD stereo is in good working order to provide your own personal soundtrack during your journeys.
Still equipped with a factory-correct 1600-cc flat four-cylinder engine thats justifiably believed to be original, this Karmann Ghia starts up without a hassle, has a nice smooth idle and accelerates on command. The rear-mounted engine is accompanied by a smooth-shifting 4-speed manual transmission to make for a thoroughly road-ready drivetrain. This low-slung classic weighs less than 2,000lbs., so its front disc brakes bring it to a stop in nothing flat.
