VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Paris event, 28 January 2026.
Offered Without Reserve 13,000 - 16,000 EUR

  • Popular 1302 model with desirable optional sunroof
  • Powered by a 1,300-cc air-cooled flat-four engine paired with a four-speed manual gearbox
  • Finished in Silver Metallic over a red vinyl interior
  • Delivered new to Germany and first registered in April 1971; part of The Godehardt Collection since 2018
  • Accompanied by a certificate issued by Volkswagen Classic Parts that lists original specification

In a production run spanning some 65 years, small details of the Volkswagen Beetle evolved and improved over time, yet the iconic bug-like shape of the car remained largely unchanged. As a result, the Beetle is recognised as the best-selling car of all time with a single body style.

The 1302 model offered here is from the Super Beetle range introduced in the early 1970s, which modernised the classic design with revamped suspension, a larger front boot, and more powerful engine options. This car is fitted with a 1,300-cc air-cooled flat-four, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Finished in its factory-correct paint shade of Silver Metallic, the car was built with a Black Leatherette interior and now wears red seats and door cards. It is fitted with a desirable optional sunroof, as noted by the accompanying certificate issued by Volkswagen Classic Parts in December 2025.

Noted as complete by the factory on 20 January 1971, the Volkswagen was delivered new to Mannheim, Germany and first registered in April 1971 in the Bruchsal region, near Karlsruhe. The Beetle was acquired by The Godehardt Collection in June 2018 after being sourced from a specialist air-cooled Volkswagen dealer in the Netherlands. The 1302 presents in largely original condition and belies its 55 years, clearly cherished in current and prior ownership.
