Classic Car Overview

Awesome 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT tribute (unrestored survivor). This is a very nice XR7 that has been upgraded as a GT tribute and is a blast to drive. The 351C has been upgraded with a Holly QFT 600cfm, Edelbrock intake, headers and Flowmasters and I believe ported heads to an estimated 300hp. A shift kit was installed in the FMX trans. Front and rear GT springs and have been installed as well as premium components including upper and lower control arms, idler arm and KYB shocks all around. Now she sits 1" lower now and handles like a GT on new BG Goodrich tires and Vision Legend 141 rims. Also, many other new parts have been installed including steering box, master cylinder, fuel tank, starter, high output alternator, regulator, thermostat. It has factory air but does not blow cold and only needs the freon conversion. A previous owner repainted the car the original color prior to 2012. I would do some cosmetic work but not necessary, like re-chrome the rear bumper and replace the vinyl roof (numerous rust bubbles but nothing soft) and a couple small blisters on rear passenger fender lip. Also, I saw a 1/8' hole in the cowl. I repainted the rear interior panels, but the console could use a refresh too. That's it. It's a great fun car and I hate to let it go. I spent all my money on it and lost 40% of my income. Maybe someone else can finish what I started or thoroughly enjoy it as is.

I believe the condition is between good and excellent (#3-#2). That puts the value of an XR7 4v between $19k-$28k. But since it's a GT tribute that increases its value. Hagerty only lists GT with a 429ci between $44k-$69k so a 351 CJ would be a lot less. Also, a restored 72 XR7 CJ was bid to $37k and a 71GT 351C CJ was priced at $55k. Most other listings in the Classic Auto Trader are near $40k. Considering all the upgrades I think it is worth $40k but I'm listing it for $20k less than that, a really great deal at that price. Most other 71-72 Cougars have not been upgraded like this one.
