VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. One of the most well-regarded aftermarket tuners in the industry, Brabus has been synonymous with their work to upgrade and modify Mercedes-Benzs best products since their inception in 1977. Alongside their work on modern automobiles, Brabus Classic operates as a top-notch restorer for Mercedes-Benzes of yesteryear, and is an official ClassicPartner of Mercedes-Benz classic, a testament to their attention to detail in restoring cars just as they left the factory.

The 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet offered here was subject to one of Brabus 6-Star Restorations back to its stately and original color combination of Anthracite Grey metallic over a grey leather interior with dark grey carpets, a black soft top, and burled wood trim. Carefully disassembled, stripped to bare metal, any parts that required replacement were replaced with authentic Mercedes-Benz parts. The cars bodywork received special attention and was treated with a cataphoretic dip primer coat (CDP), something normally found on more modern vehicles to protect from corrosion. Under the skin, its mechanical components are treated with the same level of diligence, with the engine being completely disassembled and rebuilt alongside new springs, shock absorbers and new axle bearings. Additionally, the entire electrical system of the car and wiring harness were replaced to ensure utmost reliability.

Extraordinarily well equipped from the factory, this car was fitted with the most desirable factory options, including the floor-shift automatic transmission, electric windows, a Becker Europa radio, and Behr air conditioning. A restoration book produced by Brabus is included in the history file, showing that no stone was left unturned in bringing this car back to virtually as-new condition. Importantly, the car retains its original engine.

Acquired directly by the consignor from Brabus in 2017, upon the completion of the restoration, the 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet was shipped to the U.S. where it has remained ever since. Today, the car presents in excellent condition both inside and out, having covered just 66 miles since the completion of its restoration. More than capable of use on a daily basis despite being produced over five decades ago, the 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet is perhaps the perfect combination of classic charm with outstanding usability and practicality. Boasting a full Brabus restoration to its name, there can be no better classic car to use, enjoy, and cherish in any locale.
