1971 International Harvester Scout

For sale is a 1971 International Scout 800B with the 232 inline 6-cylinder engine, 3 speed transmission, 4WD (Warn locking hubs), electric choke, 31 inch tires, electronic ignition, and a clear Illinois title.

The odometer reads 99,000+ but the speedo cable is missing so TMU.

I have owned this Scout for over 4 years and I have put less than 1200 miles on it during that time. I had planned to restore it, but my plans have changed. I think it is time to let someone else restore it or enjoy it just as it is.

This is certainly not a show vehicle at the moment, but it is a great candidate for a restoration. It always starts right up, is easy to drive, and is a conversation starter. I have used it steadily for short trips around town the past few years with no issues, so I wouldnt hesitate to call it a daily driver. It has a great stance that attracts attention everywhere. This is not the vehicle for you if you do not want people regularly honking at you and waving you down to ask you questions about it.

I was told by the previous owner that this Scout spent most of its life on a ranch in Colorado, until around 2020 when they purchased it and took it to Texas. I bought it from them in early 2022 and brought it to Illinois. It has been garage kept the entire time in Illinois and has never been driven in the winter salt.

Since I purchased it in 2022, the following items have been replaced:

-All wiring (professionally installed using the Scout II harness from American Autowire)
-Battery
-Alternator
-Master cylinder
-Front wheel cylinders
-Front brake shoes
-Heater blower motor
-Air box cover
-Points were upgraded to Pertronix electronic ignition
-Fan belt
-Interior light
-Horn
-Window felt
-Temperature gauge
-Pressure gauge

The sale also includes new front floor pans (over $600) and new lower quarter panel patches ($200). It will also include a like-new service manual and parts catalog, and a copy of the original line setting ticket.

As you can see from the photos, a number of original items have been replaced over the years, such as the bumpers, seats, and side mirrors, which adds to its unique look. The current seats are grey vinyl in good condition with no tears, covered in blue/grey covers. There is no rear seat and no rear view mirror included.

The travel top is in very good shape with no dents and only a bit of surface rust on the inside. A previous owner covered the exterior with black bed liner paint.

The crank windows, tail gate, lift gate, and wing windows all work as expected. All locks on the doors and lift gate work properly and are keyed to the ignition key. All the glass is in perfect condition.

There are two gas tanks, but I have only ever used the one on the driver's side. The gas gauge for both tanks show half-full and doesn't move. I assume new sending units in the tanks are needed. The sale also includes a larger polyethylene gas tank that could be mounted under the bed as part of a restoration.

The original radio is still present, but not functioning. The heater and defroster work well.

In terms of rust, the frame is in very good condition. You can see in the photos that much of the underside is still covered with the protective coating from the factory. The rocker panels are in good shape, but there is some rust in the lower quarter panels behind the doors (replacement panels included). The bed and floor pans have lots of rust (replacement floor pans included). When I purchased the Scout there was no weather stripping and the travel top leaked a lot, which allowed water to get inside and sit. I assume this is why the bed and floor pans are in this condition. The rear caps both have some damage, which seems to be normal for all these Scouts.

The headlights, brights, tail lights, reverse lights, hazards, and side marker lights all work. One side marker lens is missing.

The windshield wipers both work as expected, as well as a horn and interior light. The dashboard, dash pad, and sun visors are in very good condition.

The exterior body was covered in white primer by a previous owner. There is some damage on the front driver side corner of the hood and the headlight bezel on that side also has some damage. There is also a small hole on the right fender near the hood. There are a number of small dimples in the body that you can see in the video.

A new set of Scout badges and the original antenna will be included as well.

I can include the master cylinder and gauges that were replaced if you are interested in restoring the originals.

1971 was the last year of the Scout 800s and the first year of the Scout II, which led to IH using some parts from both models in these last 800Bs. I found that to be true when I replaced the master cylinder, which is the Scout II model.

Scouts have been steadily increasing in value. With the upcoming release of the electric Scouts, more interest in the originals is to be expected, along with greater demand and price.
