The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Twin-cam, all-aluminum engine, five-speed transmission, four-wheel disc brakes and multi-link suspension with coil springs.
This car is among the earliest of these that are the most adored by fans, and not surprisingly, the most valued. When U.S. 5-MPH impact standards arrived, Alfas donned big, rubber bumpers, displacing the delicate front split-bumper design of the 1970-'74 U.S. models. That, coupled with reduced power, thanks to increased emissions gear, has left Spiders from 1975-'81 in a compromised light that has affected their value in the years to follow.
Today, any good small-bumper, square-tail Spider is desirable, and, evidently, on the rise. These were not inexpensive cars when new, but after some initial depreciation (even as new Spiders got ugly bumpers), by the '80s, their worth was already being recognized. The earliest models, particularly with the 1750 engine, have long maintained a slight edge, while 1972-'74s are almost always shown to have nearly identical worth.
