Brief history of the Volkswagen BusThe Volkswagen Type II is considered a cultural icon by car enthusiasts and historians alike. However, years before it was associated with hippies, free love, and protests against war, it served as a basic people mover. It was just the second Volkswagen model built, following the Beetle. Starting its production life off as a Panel Van in 1949, the Type II has gone by numerous names and has seen many variations over the years: the Kombi, Samba-Bus, Single Cab, Crew Cab/Double Cab, and the Westfalia Camping van just to name a few. The Type II not only evolved but was completely revised periodically, these variations are referred to as versions T1 to T5.
