Classic Car Overview
Here is a tribute to one of the greatest Mopars ever produced, that being the 1970 AAR Cuda. This fully restored example is one of the nicest you will find; be sure to see all the pictures including the underside. From the six-pack induction and pistol grip shifter to the Sublime green paint and AAR graphics, this one really makes an impression.
While the term restoration can be a little flimsy sometimes, that is not the case here. This project was a true nut-and-bolt effort starting with a straight, rust-free Barracuda donor car. The underside was painted to match the exterior and looks amazing; you don't get this treatment very often! A proper AAR fiberglass hood was fitted along with front eyebrow spoilers and a rear duck tail. Note the body-colored bumpers which really look great on the first year E-body. Of course, it also has the unmistakable AAR strobe stripe graphics and side exit exhaust. It rolls on fabulous 15 Rallye wheels with BF Goodrich tires (235/60 front, 255/60 rear).
Power comes from a six-pack equipped Mopar small block that is dressed as a 340 but actually displaces 366 cubic inches and runs good on pump premium gas. The top end uses a trio of Holley 2-barrel carburetors along with a large single piece air cleaner. The engine is mated to an A833 4-speed transmission followed by an 8-3/4 rear end. A 26 radiator is present while the dual exhaust has the unique AAR-style reverse flow mufflers. The car was built with manual steering and manual brakes while the suspension uses stabilizer bars front and rear. New parts abound throughout the mechanical systems.
The black interior was also redone and maintains a stock appearance. The dual high back bucket seats are about as comfortable as you could get in a 1970 muscle car. And is there a better looking shifter than a Mopar pistol grip setup? The standard dashboard offers all the basics without any excess. Everything works properly except the factory 2 watt AM radio. That includes the lights, turn signals, backup lights, horn, heater / defroster, parking brakes, and wipers with foot pump washers. The trunk is remarkable with a finish that matches the exterior. Note the space saver spare and bumper jack.
As you might expect, this Cuda draws a lot of attention wherever it goes. But it was not built to fool anyone; while it has many AAR attributes, it is not correct in every detail or wearing a Trans Am fender tag. Rather, this car presents the spirit of this legendary model at 1/3 the price, and with a level of detail far beyond that of most other classic cars.
