The high-water mark of Oldsmobiles legendary intermediate lineup, the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass, was able to blend handsome styling, everyday comfort, and serious muscle car performance. Built on GMs popular A-body platform, the Cutlass family offered something for virtually every buyer, with F-85, Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass SX, and the iconic 442 models available in coupe, hardtop, convertible, sedan, and station wagon body styles. Engine choices ranged from the economical 250-cubic-inch inline-six to Rocket V-8s displacing 350, 400, and 455 cubic inches, allowing buyers to tailor their car from practical transportation to tire-smoking performance. The 442 became Oldsmobiles flagship muscle car for 1970, benefiting from GMs removal of the corporate engine-displacement limit and receiving the formidable 455-cubic-inch V-8 as standard equipment. Sitting atop the performance ladder was the legendary W-30 package, which added forced-air induction, an aluminum intake manifold, special camshaft, fiberglass hood, and numerous performance upgrades, producing a factory-rated 370 horsepower and establishing the W-30 as the ultimate expression of Oldsmobile muscle.

This 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W-30 Convertible Tribute was originally built at the Lansing, Michigan plant and born with a 350-cubic-inch Rocket V-8. Shipped on January 30, 1970, it was destined for the export market and sold new through Community Chevrolet Olds Ltd. in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In 1977, it was acquired by its long-term owner, Mr. Dave Koswoski of Canada. His beloved muscle car, he treated it to an extensive photo-documented body-off-the-frame restoration. This Cutlass is accompanied by a large file of invoice records that details each item, date of purchase, and price; the restoration was completed in 2007 and totaled over $75,000, a hefty amount for the period.

A truly beautiful outcome, the body was finished in Sunrise Yellow, the inner fenders were painted red, a new white convertible top was added, and the interior was inlaid with deluxe ivory bucket seats. The body of this Oldsmobile received a W-30 appearance package that included correct badging, a W-30 fiberglass Ram Air induction with air cleaner assembly, and white rally stripes. To match its appearance, a desirable 455-cubic-inch 350-horsepower big-block V-8 engine was sourced, rebuilt, and installed. The automatic transmission and remaining drivetrain were rebuilt at this same time. Furthering its drivability and desirability, this example is equipped with factory power steering, power brakes, power windows, factory tach, and cruise control. To celebrate this impressive and correct tribute, this 442 W-30 was displayed at the 2007 ISCA World of Wheels where it took home a Best in Class award.

Mr. Koswoski retained this example until 2022 when it was acquired by a new owner who performed a mechanical freshening. In 2023, it went to just its second private owner since 1977. Since then, it has been well maintained and driven sprangly. Accompanying the sale of this Oldsmobile, is a large file of invoice records, a photo album detailing the restoration, an owners manual, and its award plaque from the World of Wheels show.

A beautifully presented tribute to Oldsmobiles legendary W-30, this 442 offers the appearance, performance, and presence that made the 1970 model one of the most celebrated muscle cars of its generation.
