Loaded with options and eye-catching in Competition Blue paint with black stripes, this very special 1970 Cougar Eliminator In many ways, the Eliminator package for the Cougar was like the Mach 1 package for the Mustang. There was plenty of eye appeal with front and rear spoilers, hood scoop and bold tape stripes. But it was far more than an appearance group. Performance was built in. Only the most powerful V-8 engines were available in both the Eliminator and Mach 1, and their suspensions were upgraded with firmer springs and shocks and thicker sway bars. (Mercury called it the Competition Handling Package.) This Cougar Eliminator was built for Fords lease program and was for a time owned by a Ford executive, so it is a heavily optioned cat. The engine is as powerful as it gets: a 335 HP Q-code 428 Cobra Jet V-8, date-code correct for the car and joined to a Select Shift (C6) 3-speed automatic transmission and a 3:00:1-geared Traction-Lok rearend. Other performance options include power steering and power brakes with front discs. The Cougar isnt short on convenience options, starting with the factory Whisper-Aire air conditioning and including a rear window defogger, intermittent wipers, tinted glass, courtesy lights, the Protection Group and Dcor Group. The Comfortweave high-back bucket seats are equipped with Deluxe seat belts, and theres a center console between the buckets. A Marti Report comes with the recently restored Cougar to document its various options. Sources indicate less than 2,300 Cougar Eliminators were built for the 1970 model year, and fewer than 250 of those were equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet engine.
