VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys The Willy Michiels Collection event, 8 - 15 September 2026.

  • One of a mere 42 examples of the 600 Six-Door Pullman limousine produced
  • Believed to be one of 11 cars factory-equipped with a sunroof and air conditioning
  • Further features a cabin divider, fold-out rear seats, and front wing flag mount
  • Wears grey paintwork over a blue leather and grey cloth interior with wood trim
  • Powered by a 6.3-litre V-8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission

Due to its outstanding luxury and sheer complexity, the Mercedes-Benz 600 launched in 1963 as the most expensive car in the world. Featuring self-levelling air suspension in addition to a hydraulics system that ran at a colossal 3,000 pounds-per-square-inch to operate the seats, windows, doors, boot lid, and shock absorbers, it was a symbol of power, wealth, and excess. Little wonder so many were ordered new by royalty, heads of state, and industry titans.

Mercedes-Benz also introduced Pullman versions, the name evoking opulent railway travel. Only 482 of the Pullam variants were built, with just 42 of those being the extended-wheelbase Six-Door limousine as denoted by their 016 chassis number sequence. The left-hand-drive car offered here further boasts a sunroof and air conditioning; just 11 of the Six-Door Pullmans were configured with these options from the factory.

While little is known about this particular 600s ownership history, it has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Rolls-Royces and Maybachs as part of The Willy Michiels Collection in Belgium. Wearing grey paintwork over a blue leather and grey cloth interior featuring wood trim, it is equipped with a cabin divider between the front and rear passenger compartments, fold-out rear seats, and a flag mount on the front wing.

This would make for a charismatic and statement addition to any motoring collection.

Please note, most of the vehicles in The Willy Michiels Collection have been retained on static display for many years. As such, some cars and motorcycles will require mechanical servicing to be made roadworthy. As part of this estate sale, the vehicles are offered in their condition as found, and wherever possible RM Sothebys encourages prospective buyers to inspect any lots prior to bidding. Please contact an RM Sothebys Car Specialist for the condition of specific lots or with any further questions. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/wm26/.
