The third Mercedes-Benz to wear the SL badge, the W113 generation SL-Class was show to the public in the summer of 1963. The new 230 SL was engineered to get closer to the performance of the racing-derived 300 SL in comparison to the attractive but somewhat tepid-performing 190 SL, but still offer the comfort and safety buyers desired. A fuel-injected 2.3L Inline-6, later enlarged to 2.5L and, eventually, 2.8L, proved more than adequate for the task. Coupled with iconic styling and a unique, slightly concave Pagoda hardtop, the W113 SL quickly won the hearts of period celebrities.
As always, Mercedes engineers strove to improve the car. In December 1967, the 280 SL replaced the 250 SL. Its upgraded engine promised increased performance, while interior appointments were finer than ever. While most were equipped with a 4-speed automatic, a manual transmission was still offered for those who wished for a comfortable sports car versus a sporty cruiser. These cars have become increasingly desirable over the years, with values of high-quality examples growing dramatically. Between this and their endlessly enjoyable driving experience, W113 SL-Classes are superb vehicles for any discerning collector or enthusiast.
The stunning 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster featured here is finished in classic Black over a gorgeous Dark Red leather interior with a Black folding convertible soft top and body-color removable hardtop. Fitted with options such as an automatic transmission, power steering, and factory air conditioning, this 280 SL is the perfect example to be driven and enjoyed. Accompanying this investment-grade 280 SL are its original owners manual, spare tire, and tools. We are proud to offer what we believe to be one of the very best 280 SL Roadsters to the market today to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own the very best!
