VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

This is Benzamin. I purchased this 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SE (W108) in 2021 from my neighbor who used this vehicle as a daily driver for 30+ years. I admired it for over a decade and one day my neighbor approached me and said that she was ready to sell. As a classic car nut with too many vehicles as it was, of course, I didn't hesitate for a second.

This is a phenomenal daily driver and has proven to be incredibly reliable. It has never failed to start, the engine runs strong, and the transmission shifts flawlessly. It's been regularly maintained and inspected by two classic Mercedes specialty shops in the Bay Area and left with top praises for how mechanically sound it is. The body is as straight as it comes and doesn't appear to have ever been in an accident of any kind. I also have a stack of service receipts from over the years.

As far as I know, it's all original minus an unfortunate aftermarket stereo (which doesn't work) and the trunk lid has been repainted. Apparently, a tree branch fell onto the trunk many years ago. The trunk lid paint isn't a perfect match, but close. The original paint around the trunk lid on the top of the rear fenders is showing some signs of sun damage. It may have been affected when the trunk lid was repainted. The remaining paint is original and in great condition for its age. There are a few scratches/chips, but nothing major. The engine bay and undercarriage of the vehicle were recently professionally steam-cleaned. It has a new battery and was recently professionally serviced (lube, oil, and filter as well as all ball joints greased).

The interior needs some work. It's complete but is showing its age/use. If I had the time, I'd redo the upholstery and while the seats were out, I'd replace the carpet. I'd also replace the headliner. The dash has a couple of cracks in it and the wood trim could be refinished but is in decent shape as is. Three of the door panels are in excellent condition but there is a slight bend at the top of the front passenger side. All of the electrical works including all 4 power windows, power sunroof, and lights.

I just had my first child and I've simply run out of time to dedicate to do this vehicle justice. I'd love to give someone else the opportunity to enjoy and maintain this vehicle as is or restore it to its full autobahn glory.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Thanks!
