It is no secret that the Land Rover Series II is one of the most legendary off roaders ever produced. Known for its go-anywhere design and rugged dependability, this truck was the perfect workhorse for farmers and landowners in post-war England and went on to become sought after round the world. Dating back to 1949, Land Rover offered what were known as Complete Knock-Down (CKD) Kits which were essentially all the parts needed to build a Land Rover, they just needed assembly. With this, numerous companies sprung up around the world, producing factory-quality Land Rovers, even in far flung regions. One of the companies to gain this authorization was Ensambladora Automotriz of Costa Rica who began doing this early on, realizing that the aluminum bodied trucks would be perfect for avoiding the rust that would come with the climates humidity. They were one of the most successful producers, building thousands of Land Rovers over multiple decades. This 1970 Series IIA 88 is one of those examples built in Costa Rica, which has now been completely refurbished.
Finished in a striking red, appropriately known as Rosso Vino, it is nearly impossible to tell this Land Rover apart from an English-built vehicle. The 16-inch color matched steel wheels are wrapped in Goodyear bias-ply Mud and Snow rated tires, including the bonnet-mounted matching spare. The windscreen is a fold-down unit for the ultimate in open air driving, and there are pop-up cowl-mounted vents for when you need fresh air without the windscreen folded down. A fully removable vinyl soft top is simple to remove and install and fold down steps are fitted for the driver, passenger and rear tailgate entrance.
As one might expect from a vintage Land Rover, the interior is exceptionally simple. With three across seating in front and a pair of center-facing jump seats in the rear, this short wheelbase truck has room for 7. The seats are all wrapped in black vinyl which is durable and was clearly refinished along with the rest of the truck. The spartan dashboard features a pair of white-on-black Smiths gauges in the center, along with a few aircraft-style toggle switches to control the lights and fan.
Powering this Land Rover is a 2.25L petrol inline 4 that is paired to a 4-speed manual gearbox. Although this engine wont be winning many races, it offers great low down torque and is perfectly suited to off road use, chugging along at low revs all day. To help off road, a dual-range transfer case is fitted with locking hubs on the front wheels that allows you to get out of nearly any situation. The undercarriage of the car has been nicely finished as well and is very clean underneath.
The Land Rover Series IIA is a perfect go-anywhere classic that you can load the whole family in for a top-down drive. With this trucks interesting Costa Rican history and striking color, its a great conversation piece anywhere you go and lets you stand apart from other Rovers at your local car show. These Central American built trucks rarely make their way out of the country and finding one that has been so carefully reconditioned is quite the rarity.
