1970 Ford Fairlane 500 4 Door Sedan

For consignment, a 1970 Ford Fairlane 500 4 door sedan showing 19,807 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. The sales brochure touted, Fairlane 500 is Fords traditional intermediate size value car. Its styled and built like the Torino, which makes it more attractive than ever.

Exterior
Looking wonderfully original, the single stage Medium Gold Metallic paint is a sign of the times and as we enter the 70s, the ornamental trim is toned down, here with just two short spears on the front fender flanking the side body molding. Its face is conservative too with a grated grille taking in quad headlights underscored by a simple chrome bumper. The front fenders drop a character line into the front doors but otherwise this is a slab sided car and horizontal surfaces are mostly flat. A sloping rear window sheds air to the long decklid, followed by a handsome rear fascia that includes sectioned, horizontal tail lights and a hugging chrome fender. 14-inch wheels have standard wheel covers and are wrapped in 215/75R14s. Imperfections include dimpling in the paint, cracking, stains, chips, rust where the window frame meets the door, paint and body issue on a door edge, filler and repaint near a wheel opening, discoloration, and some paints run up front.

Interior
Padded black vinyl door panels adorn this commuter and present in excellent condition, each with their own window crank. The front bench combines smooth vinyl and printed cloth inserts, all in black, a pattern repeated in back and both benches are clean. Up front, the cars sole mission of getting families from point A to point B without fanfare is spelled out in a horizontal instrument cluster, all in black and all in time capsule like condition. Even the dash pad shows no blemishes or cracks and the black and white floor mat below is matched in condition by the stitched headliner above complete with shoulder belts and sun visors. The clean trunk is a clinic in originality with rust free surfaces, a spare tire, jack and a plaid vinyl mat ubiquitous for the time.

Drivetrain
The engine bay is an impressive place too, here housing a 302ci V8 that boasts 220 horsepower fueled via a 2-barrel carburetor. Its mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to the Ford 8 in back with 3.00 gears. The car has power steering and air conditioning on board.

Undercarriage
Theres surface rust in the typical places but the underside appears solid and dry. We note one area of corrosion on the drivers inner trunk drop off. Drum brakes are employed front and rear and single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler before exiting in back. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
We fully expect to hear Raindrops keep falling on my head over the AM/FM/Cassette radio but for now, were listening to the engine and exhaust which raise no red flags. The car has good power and tracks straight and its simple interior design is pleasing and a long way from 2026. All functions on this well preserved Fairlane 500 operate just as they should save for the wipers sticking from time to time, and its time to bring it indoors where its likely lived most of its 55 years.
