Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys Monterey event, 15 - 16 August 2025.
$400,000 - $500,000 USD

  • The rarest of the Dino 246 series; one of just 357 L-series examples produced
  • Numbers-matching engine and gearbox, according to a history report by Marcel Massini
  • Eye-catching livery of Giallo Fly over Navy vinyl
  • Restoration by marque expert Francorchamps of America, Inc., completed in 2005
  • Accompanied by factory owners books, tool roll, and restoration invoices

After just 150 Dino 206 GTs were built, the more powerful and refined 246 GT debuted in March 1969. Produced in L, M, and E series denoting the first through third generations a total of 3,761 units were made, including both coupes and spiders. The L models, easily identified by their center-locking knock-off wheels and limited to just 357 units, are widely regarded as the rarest and most coveted of the series.

This lovely L-Series Dino 246 GT, chassis 00908, completed production on 8 June 1970 cloaked in the timeless Ferrari color of Rosso Chiaro (20-R-190) over Nero vinyl. A European-specification example, 00908 was equipped from the factory with instruments in kilometers, center-lock wheels, and headrests mounted to the rear bulkhead.

After being dispatched from the factory, the car was imported to America via casino magnate William Harrahs Modern Classic Motors of Reno, Nevada, before being sold to its first owner through Ron Tonkin Chevrolet in Portland, Oregon. Its history picks back up in 1981 when a Southern California-based enthusiast purchased 00908 and reportedly cherished the car until 1996, when it was sold to another enthusiast in the Golden State. They commissioned a complete restoration in 1998 by Francorchamps of America, Inc. (FAI) of Costa Mesa, California.

Over what became a seven-year process, FAI disassembled and stripped the car to bare metal and meticulously rebuilt every component, including the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, and wiring. An included history report by Marcel Massini confirms the presence of the cars numbers-matching engine and gearbox. Before reassembly, the Dino was refinished in striking Giallo Fly with a richly appointed cabin in Navy vinyl.

Upon completion in 2005, 00908 debuted on the show circuit where it racked up an impressive list of accolades, including numerous Platinum and First-in-Class wins at Ferrari Club of America and Cavallino events throughout the West Coast.

Accompanied by owners books, a tool roll, awards, and restoration invoices, chassis number 00908 represents a beautifully restored example of the rarest of all Dino 246 GTs.
