Dodge built only 287 Hemi Challengers in 1970 across all body styles combined, making the original Hemi R/T one of the rarest factory configurations of the first-year car. The 426 Hemi produced 425 horsepower from the factory with two four-barrel carburetors on a cross-ram intake, and it earned a reputation on the street and at the dragstrip that no other Mopar engine has matched before or since. By 1971 the Hemi was gone from the Challenger entirely, which gives every 1970 Hemi car a finality that adds to the significance of the engine regardless of its matching status.
