Classic Car Overview
1970 Dodge Challenger
When the Dodge Challenger first went on sale in 1969 as a 1970 model car, it was designed to compete in the more upscale Pony Car class against the likes of the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird. Based on the Chrysler E-Body chassis, the Challenger was viewed as a rather late addition to the Pony Car class but to set it apart from the rest, Chrysler set out to make it the most powerful and customizable of any car in the class. Unlike cars from Ford and GM the Challenger could be optioned with nearly any engine in the brands range, meaning it became one of the fastest and thus, most desirable Pony Cars produced.
This 1970 Dodge Challenger is finished in its stunning original shade of Plum Crazy with a black vinyl top, and has the distinction of being first sold locally at Matsons Valley Motors in Auburn, WA. The consignor of this Challenger purchased it from the original owner in 1981 and it still wears its original license plates and plate frames- both of which are absolutely unobtainable items these days. It is no surprise that this car has been photographed for a feature in the December 2023 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines Magazine in light of the cars condition and story.
The first thing that hits you when you look at this car is obviously the color, but the more you look at it, the more special it gets. Many of these cars were modified in period but have either been restored to stock, or turned into resto-mods- whereas this car benefits from a multi-year restoration, but was restored with some desirable period modifications on the car. 15" Keystone wheels are paired with period-correct staggered Goodyear Polyglas tires, and Lakewood traction bars in the back give it the proper 1970s street racer stance.
The interior of this Challenger is finished in black vinyl and consists of a pair of bucket seats up front, and a bench in the rear. Like with the exterior, the interior of this Challenger is in top overall condition and would stand up to scrutiny at any car show you bring it to. A wood rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel is complemented by wood trim on the dashboard -- which is fitted with a full suite of gauges -- and wood trim also graces the center console which is an updated unit from 1971. A 10 Watt AM/FM, 8-track stereo is fitted, continuing with the period correct elements of this car.
Powering this Challenger is a 340ci V8 with a 4 bbl carburetor sitting on top. A date code correct example, this engine is fitted with a set of finned Ansen valve covers that offer great contrast against the Chrysler Orange engine block and manifold. This motor is then backed up with a 727 Torqueflite automatic gearbox with "Slap-Stick" shifting. As with the rest of the car, both under the hood and the complete underside of the car is spotless and there is no reason that you couldnt get in this car, drive it to a local show and take home a trophy.
The thing that separates this Challenger from other examples on the market is this, you can find other cars and restore them to a show winning level, but finding a car that has been under the care of just two owners from new is basically impossible. Included with the sale of this car are the original books and manuals, original spare tire, tool kit and jack to make the car an even more complete package. In the world of high value collector cars, the vehicle itself is important, but what people place extra value on is story- there is no doubt that the story of this car is unique, and finding another thats better just wont happen.
