Designed by the great Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin, the Mangusta, which was first offered in 1967, showcased the classic Italian wedge shape with classic American muscle. Featuring a heavily reinforced chassis based on the Vallelunga sports car, the Mangusta was equipped with a mid-mounted Ford V8 behind the passenger compartment. Access was granted by a set of gullwing doors which concealed the engine and manual ZF 5-speed transaxle. In North American specification, the model utilized the 5.0 liter 302ci V8, tuned to 230 horsepower. Its suspension was fully independent and featured four-corner disc brakes, while steering was especially responsive courtesy of a rack-and-pinion steering gear. The interior was dressed in leather and featured full instrumentation, which added to the race car feel. In its time, the Mangusta offered supercar level performance with incredibly stylish Italian flair. It is no wonder why examples are highly sought-after by collectors today. With only 401 built until 1971 and only around 250 known to exist recently, Mangustas have been increasingly difficult to procure, especially in finely restored, original specification condition.
The incredible 1970 DeTomaso Mangusta featured here is finished in its original factory color combination of Red over Black leather. One of only 401 Mangustas ever built, this particular example has been meticulously maintained and previously owned by a Pan-Am pilot for 14 years. This stunning DeTomaso drives and presents wonderfully, having only traveled 63,704 miles from new. Accompanying this investment-grade DeTomaso Mangusta are its owners manual, over 30 years of service records, tools, Italian parts catalog, and more! We are proud to offer this exceptional 1970 DeTomaso Mangusta to the most astute collector or investor who appreciates this legendary model that perfectly blended American power with Italian design and craftsmanship.
