Classic Car Overview

1970 Datsun 240Z Early Series I Chassis No. HLS30-07983 Completed August 1970 Beautifully restored, finished in New Sight Orange (918) with a Black interior, this is a very early-production Datsun 240Z - Series I. A superb 240Z that redefined the affordable sports car segment in the 1970s. A long-time Southern California 240Z that has remained under the care of its current owner for the decade, this 240Z benefits from a comprehensive, high-quality restoration performed by marque specialists, with a clear emphasis on authenticity. The paintwork is stunning and is in beautiful condition, complemented by the brightwork and chrome bumpers. Inside, the interior features a wooden steering wheel, a wooden shifter knob, a 160-mph speedometer, a 7,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, amperage, and fuel level. The factory Hitachi radio and analog clock are positioned within the center gauges, preserving the original cockpit layout that defines early Series I. The 240Z rides on the original 14 slot mag wheels fitted to Goodyear VIVA 2 185 70 R14 tires, with the correct stance and original look. The undercarriage is immaculate, solid, and rust-free. Between 2017 and 2018, the 240Z underwent a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The engine was rebuilt by Vellios Auto, with final assembly completed by Quality Auto in Torrance, California. The carburetors were rebuilt, and the transmission was rebuilt with new bearings and resealed. The engine bay was detailed, including all the sheet metal and hardware to a factory spec. The 240Z was repainted, fitted with new weatherstripping, and all the brightwork was re-chromed. Expert Auto Upholstery installed a complete new interior with SQL sound insulation, including new carpeting, reupholstered the seats, door panels, back panels, and headliner. In March of 2025, Saddleback Cars Auto Repair in Mission Viejo, California, performed the following work: clock repair, replacement of all fuel lines, installation of Zerks in the rear axles, repaired the turn signal switch, and replacement of the dash. Mechanically, the 240Z is powered by its 2.4-liter inline-six-cylinder engine, paired with a manual five-speed transmission, and features front disc and rear drum brakes. Performance remains true to the models celebrated reputation, with factory-rated output of 151 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, 146 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, 0 60 mph in approximately 8.0 seconds, and a top speed of 120 mph. With a curb weight of 2,300 pounds, steel unibody construction, rear-wheel drive, and coil-spring suspension with MacPherson struts up front and independent rear suspension, the early Series I-240Z delivers a uniquely balanced, lightweight driving experience that made it a benchmark of its era. Offered with service records and restoration documentation, this is a highly desirable early 240Z Series I - faithfully restored with a strong focus on originality and represents the best model of the 240Zs.
