Classic Car Overview
1970 Datsun 240Z - Series I Chassis No. HLS30-12242 Completed November 1970 Meticulously restored and finished in vibrant yellow with black upholstery, this early-production Datsun 240Z - Series I exemplifies the model that redefined the affordable sports car segment of the 1970s. A long-time Southern California vehicle has been under the care of its current owner for the past nine years. The 240Z benefits from a comprehensive, high-quality restoration performed by marque specialists, including both mechanical and cosmetic components. The paintwork is stunning throughout, complemented by the brightwork, a steel front spoiler, and chrome bumpers. Inside, the black interior retains its signature period details, including the wooden steering wheel, wooden shifter knob, a 160-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm tachometer, with auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, amperage, fuel level, and an analog clock arranged in the center gauge stack. The factory Hitachi radio has been upgraded for FM functionality. The 240Z rides on 15 x 7 Konig Rewind wheels (the original rims are also included) mounted to Falken Pro G4 A/S 205 60 R15 tires, offering a correct stance while enhancing handling. The undercarriage is immaculate, solid, and rust-free. Between 2017 and 2018, the 240Z underwent a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The engine was rebuilt by Vellios Auto, while Quality Auto of Torrance, California, completed the final engine assembly. The carburetors were rebuilt, and the transmission was rebuilt with new bearings and resealed. The engine bay was also detailed, including the sheet metal and hardware, to a factory finish. The 240Z was completely repainted, with new weatherstripping, and all the brightwork was re-chromed for a show-quality finish. Universal Auto Upholstery installed a completely new interior, including Dynamat sound insulation, new carpeting, and re-upholstered seats. Door panels and a headliner were also installed. Aussie Auto AC & Heating serviced the air conditioning system, installing a new air pump, A/C belt, fan clutch, and compressor. The result is a 240Z that offers both the tactile engagement of an early Japanese sports car and the refinement expected of a well-sorted classic. Mechanically powered by a 2.4L inline 6-cylinder engine paired to a manual 4-speed transmission with front discs and rear drums brakes. Performance was impressive, with 151 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 146 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 8.0 seconds and reaching a top speed of 120 mph. Very desirable early 240Z - Series I, very fun to drive, and performs unbelievably well. Complete with service records, jack, and records of the restoration. Curb weight: 2300 lbs. The 240Z features a steel unibody chassis, Rear Wheel Drive, and coil-spring suspension with MacPherson struts in front and independent suspension all around, making it a balanced sports car of its era. The 240Z was praised for its combination of reliable power, nimble handling, and competitive performance for the price range in the 1970s. This makes the 1970 Datsun 240Z a classic lightweight sports car with respectable power and handling, very capable for its time.
