Classic Car Overview

It wasnt until 1968 that the El Camino, featuring a total body makeover, and loaded with a more powerful SS engine, took its place in the iconic lineup of American muscle cars and remained there for the remainder of the 1960s and throughout the 1970s. This 1970 version has a circa 1972 402ci V8, a 4-barrel carb and features a new A-body, Chevelle front clip, and Monte Carlo front parking lights, and is bathed in black striped Turquoise Mist paint all looking great for this truck, uhh car, no no truck...well you get it! Exterior Fairly straight rust free steel, well minded gaps, great chrome and stainless trimmings, all bathed nicely in slightly dulled Turquoise Mist. Black racing stripes are on the hood and the SS badge is below the center grille. From the B pillar forward its look...! its a Chevelle SS , but from the B pillar rearward, its look! ...its a hauler.. For the bed to do that hauling, we see more straight steel painted black with a rattle can, showing some scratches and different shades of black and we have a place to put the goods. Throw on some shiny wheel well trimmings, black racing stripes on top of the dual bumped hood, and add in some 15 inch-bowtie factory rally wheels and wrap these in raised white letter BFG Radial T/As... now were smoking. Interior KISS is the theme from the interior and it does so by utilizing plenty of black vinyl. For the doors we get the vertical tuck and roll design on the center panels where shiny actuator, armrest, and brown handled crank levers are mounted. The uppers and lowers are delineated by a thin shiny trimming that emulates the top of a bowtie badge (look closely!). Crossing over the missing threshold which holds back a sea of black carpeting currently only mounted in the front. The back floors are bare metal primed and showing some surface rust. We can pick the only bench in front for our seating, and these chairs backs fold forward for some slight extra storage. These are also black vinyl with some tuck and roll, but mostly smooth seats and bolsters. Upfront, we can take in the original dash, with in dash tachometer, circular slightly inset gauges and knob setup from 1970. An AM/FM radio, AC, and power steering are there for making the drive just a bit easier. This all resides in a textured faux leather dash front with a black padded topper. A 3 spoke GM steering wheel is fronting this dash. New back floor pans are in but as noted have some surface rust, (likely from standing water), in their centers. Drivetrain In a fully restored engine bay plenty of hoses and wiring wraps around the now a 402ci V8 stuffed under this hood. It has an Edelbrock intake manifold, a 4-barrel carburetor with an open chromed plate style air cleaner covering. On back is a TH400 3 speed automatic tranny, and waaaay back a 12 bolt 3.31 posi rear axle below the bed. An orange/red GM block gets a peek out of all the wiring, AC and engine cooling hoses, as do some headers now on the 402 cubes for the exhale. Lets go smoke the tires! Undercarriage Some patina and wear but fairly clean and well kept original undercarriage. Solid floor pans, rockers and supporting frame. Dual stock exhaust works its way rearward but comes to a halt prior to the rear axle. Power disc brakes upfront and power drum brakes on the back persist with independent coil springs up front, and a 4 link with coil springs is mounted on the back. Drive-Ability These late 60s early 70s muscle cars never cease to amaze me and this one is all ready to perform for you. Just sneak it a treat of High-Test gas and it will stand on its own two rear tires..(well maybe not!), but it performs beautifully, great acceleration, good solid braking, and smooth automatic tree shift selecting. All working, and all good for the test track drive. A fine example of a restored EL Camino right out of its prime year 1970. A pre gas crisis, pre emissions car, with more than enough capabilities to haul goods and some ass! Car? Truck?
