From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Over $50K invested in this car within a 10,000 mile/12 year span of ownership. I have all receipts, too much to list. In addition to the highlights below, the frame was powder coated, and the car completely rewired upon re-assembly with a Painless wiring kit:
Exterior: Completely stock in appearance, bed is painted yellow, the bed cover is black marine vinyl to match the stripes. The cowl induction hood has flapper, Never Driven in the rain. The body is perfect-- very straight. New Bumpers front and rear.
Interior: Bucket seats, console, unmolested dash, aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette, 4 speakers, retractable aftermarket shoulder straps (vs lap belts). Upgraded AC with 134 refrigerant (vs R12 as originally equipped)-- and it blows COLD. New carpeting, Power Windows and Door locks, too!
Engine: Professionally built 454, .060 over, VERY streetable Comp Roller Cam with Comp roller-tip rockers (218/224 duration), Edelbrock oval port aluminum heads, 8 quart oil pan, TRW forged pistons with, 9.5:1 compression, Aluminum radiator, mini starter. Full MSD ignition with Vacuum advance, Holley Avenger 780 Carb on Edelbrock Air Gap Manifold, Approx. 450 HP
Suspension and Driveline: Super T-10 transmission with 2.64 first gear, 12 bolt rear end w/3.08 posi gearing, (great for freeway cruising!) PST suspension (4 link set up) , Hotchkis Upper A arms with Tall Spindles to improve handling performance, new polyurethane body bushings from Energy Suspension, Stainless Steel disc brakes with 2 piston calipers on the front, stock drums on the rear (but I have a kit to upgrade to disc, I just haven’t done it yet. Frame is completely powder coated. 16" torque thrust wheels with 245 rubber on all corners.
