The story of the ZL1 Camaro, fitted with that rarest of the rare, all-aluminum 427 big-block V-8, is one that has often been told: How only 69 were made, how they exploited the GM option-ordering system, and how they've become the Camaro guy's ultimate Camaro.
Classic Car Overview
This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro is a proper Z/28 Tribute and much more. After all, the Z-car didnt give you four-wheel disc brakes or a loaded leather interior with a touchscreen stereo. Even the small block has been updated to a powerful crate V8 with fuel injection. This coupe has the look of something special. The upgraded RS front end has the proper split bumper look, and the added billet grille adds shine and distinction to this desirable feature. Theres plenty of Z/28 sportiness with the deep chin spoiler, wide rear spoiler, and full badging. Plus, the Z-cars were the ones that really got to wear the racing stripes. And those bright white streaks look bold against the metallic red paint. Its all part of a package that takes what we love about the 2nd gen Camaro and just upgrades it a notch. You see it in how the powerful cowl hood is a bit taller. While this one has polished alloy wheels they stay true to classic style with Ansen Sprint slotted mags. The interior has a fresh and dark presentation. There are plenty of great upgrades within. For example, the 70 Camaro was the only 2nd gen to get low-back bucket seats. So that style remains but with an updated set with better bolstering and finished in supple leather. There are more great upgrades like a Viper alarm system, power locks, and a new TMI center console that includes cup holders and cool red stitching to go with the exterior. The radio has been upgraded to a Kenwood AM/FM touchscreen with Bluetooth, and this connects to a full subwoofer stereo system. And at the heart of this upgraded interior is a great drivers package, you have a B&M floor shifter, sports steering wheel on tilt column, power steering, and the dash is now a carbon fiber like panel filled with AutoMeter Phantom gauges. Z/28s are famous for small block power, so the engine bay starts with the right base. But you can tell by the polished components and tidy presentation that this is a far fresher version of the legend. Its a L64 crate V8 that has been upgraded further with a FiTech electronic fuel injection system. The V8 fires up readily like a good FI machine should, and the headers add extra power and rumble while feeding the dual exhaust. This also has good fundamentals with new wiring, a new throttle body cable, new heater core, serpentine belt system, and an aluminum radiator w/electric fan. The three-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt to handle this big power, including a 2500 stall. Plus, there are more stout pieces, like the Ford 9-inch rear, subframe connectors, new springs, traction bars, and the superior stopping power of four-wheel power disc brakes.
