Following its successful Neue Klasse range of sedans from the 1950s, BMWs next model launch, the 02 Series, would continue its upward trajectory with two-door sport coupes a hit as soon as they went on sale in 1966. The 1600-2, later called the 1602, launched with a new 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder, internal code M10. In 1968, BMW would launch the iconic 2002, with an uprated 2.0-liter version of this vaunted engine, which would continue to evolve and power BMWs through the 1980s.
The cars forward-leaning stance gave it a purposeful look, while the low waistline and big glasshouse endowed it with excellent visibility all around. The BMW 2002 was a strong performer, producing around 100 horsepower in standard tune and around 118 horsepower in the uprated Ti spec, which featured dual carburetors and higher compression. A fuel-injected Tii version with even more power supplanted the Ti in 1971, while a turbocharged model debuted in 1973. Immensely popular and hugely successful in competition, the 2002 helped solidify BMWs reputation as a preeminent maker of high-performance automobiles.
This 2002 Ti was acquired out of Poland in 2017 and imported to the United States the following year. It presents well in its attractive color combination of beige over tan upholstery. In 2018, the car benefited from mechanical refurbishment, which included thoroughly recommissioning the clutch, along with the fuel, suspension, and braking systems, among other things. Invoices are on file for review. Well-maintained and well-presented, this spritely coupe would be ideal for touring and showing.
