Classic Car Overview
1970 AMC AMX
For consignment, a 1970 AMC AMX with a title verified 48,874 actual miles. This car was purchased by the title holder in 1985, and restored in 2005 including an engine overhaul. This car is an AACA Senior First Prize and Grand National winner.
Exterior
Sitting on 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels, this racy car with its long front hood and beautiful long sloping back looks great in Matador Red. While later added as an option, this is the final year of the AMX with several one year design aspects including the grille which now takes in the marker lights, and the aggressive hood with bulging intake scoops. The tail light treatment now includes a light bar design and central reverse light topped with an AMX call out. Rocker trim is brighter and a bit racier, and additional callouts are posted on the C-pillars. Looking at this design, its clear it was ahead of its time with the inset door handles, and the flush mounted bumpers, giving way to dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes peeking out. Imperfections include mismatched front fender corners, touched up edge chips, various scuffs, scratches, and chips, and a gap issue on the hood.
Interior
Grabbing onto the inset door handle and giving it a swing, we see clean black vinyl covering the doors with a rectangle of wood appliqu dresses us the stitch patterned insert. Moving inside, dual high back buckets with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters and headrests all in black vinyl and all looking very nice. Simulated wood serves to face the dashboard behind a two spoke rim blow steering wheel with wooden rim. The original dash with a trio of circular gauges with white lettering on black faces, including a clock and speedometer that squeezes numbers up to 140 mph. AMX is expressed on the dash for all to see, just above the AM/FM radio while the floor is occupied by a Hurst shifter and black loop carpet. Carpet also covers the rear cargo area, a seam free, smooth black headliner hovers above, and our trunk is clean under a plaid vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
Clean and show worthy is how we find the correct 360ci V8 under the hood, rated at 290 horsepower and fed fuel via a 4-barrel carburetor. Mounted behind it is a T10 4-speed manual transmission routing power to the AMC 20 rear differential with 3.15 gears. The car has power steering and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
New exhaust was installed in 2019 and still looks good in the clean environment of the underside. Its a dual system running through stock style mufflers, then finding its way to a rear exit. Brakes are configured as front disc and rear drum and suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf springs in back. No surface rust nor errant fluids are noted and the knuckles are free of debris.
Drive-Ability
Americas other muscle car does not disappoint on the test loop where more than adequate power is observed, straight tracking on tires with a late 2020 date code, and braking that fits the cars vintage appeal. A check of our notes revealed the turn signals, reverse lights, heater blower, and radio were not working during our short drive, and our consignor notes that the AC needs to be charged, while all other functions available work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
AMXs have quietly gained a new audience and both values and desirability reflect the renewed interest in this somewhat rare and certainly unique pony car. When we have the honor to represent them at the mall, they generally race out of here in short order. This one checks all the boxes and the 1970 styling in red is a show stopper.
