Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

This 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a black-on-black coupe powered by a rebuilt 1,776cc flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Text me instead of email. The seller acquired the car in 2020 and commenced with cosmetic and mechanical modifications in September 2021 that included refinishing the body, refurbishment of the interior, and the installation of dual Weber carburetors and an electric heating system. Additional work included the replacement of the steering box, brakes, and seals. This Karmann Ghia is now offered with the removed factory exhaust manifolds, the factory rear license plate holder, and a clean California title in the sellers name. The Karmann-built body was repainted under current ownership in black and features new weatherstripping along with contrasting silver-finished headlamp and taillight bezels, grilles, windshield wipers, outside mirrors, and door handles. Modifications include front turn signal lamps that are repositioned behind the front grilles, an illuminated aftermarket rear license plate holder, and bodywork to cover the mounting points of the removed bumpers. The factory license plate holder is included in the sale.Polished 15 eight-spoke EMPI GT8 wheels are wrapped in 135-series Nankang N-803 tires up front and 165/80 Signet SB-802 rear tires out back. Work performed since September 2021 included bleeding the brakes as well as replacement of the steering box and front rotors and calipers. The interior features seats upholstered in black with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Amenities include a period-style Bluetooth-enabled stereo, a EMPI gear shifter, and a gray fabric headliner.A black four-spoke 12 steering wheel fronts chrome-bezel instrumentation consisting of a 90-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a fuel level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 56k miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown. The front trunk houses an aftermarket electric heater. Exhaust modifications rendered the factory heater inoperable. The factory flat-four is said to have been rebuilt approximately 500 miles ago to 1,776cc specification. Equipment includes dual Weber 44 carburetors, replacement pistons and bearings, dual-port cylinder heads, a non-full-flowing block, an Engle W-110 camshaft, and PerTronix ignition.Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. An EMPI side-flow exhaust system is installed, and the removed factory exhaust manifolds are included in the sale.
