The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.
Classic Car Overview
This 1969 Volkswagen Convertible has undergone a complete frame off "rotisserie" restoration. This is a numbers matching car but the original engine in not in the car, but was rebuilt and will go with the car. The engine in the car is discussed below in some details from the restoration:
The current engine in the car has a new case dual (dual oil relief), rebuilt single port heads (new ones not available anymore), counterweighted crank, lightened flywheel, full flow oil filter pump assy, cool tins, hydraulic cam lifters and pushrods ($2384.00) purchased in a long block and put the original tin back on after being powder coated, along with new carburetor, which is a H30/31 PICT (Brazilian made) A new vacuum advance distributor with Petronius module, new clutch pressure plate and disc. New German exhaust and heater boxes, which work great. The air flaps that go below the cooling fans were not installed as the new thermostats are not reliable and can cause engineerings overheating. (These air flaps will come with the car).
The original engine has a set of tins that are in good shape and were not powder coated as they are the correct tins for the car. It has the newer fan shroud with offset oil cooler. It has a 009 distributor but the original vacuum advance one is with it as well. This engine has new main bearings, cam and cam bearings, cylinders and pistons (85.5mm), overhauled single port heads, cam followers. Engine was run after its overhaul but never placed in the car.
The body was dipped at Auto Restoration Depot in Wauchula, FL. ($3262.37) Also dipped were the rims, body, fenders, hood, floor pans, brake drums, convertible top frame, suspension parts, etc.
The floor pan has all new rubber bushings for the rear spring plates, pan gasket, new floor pans sourced form Wolfsburg West (heavy duty not the cheap ones), these were changed because there was a rear patch pan on both the drivers and passenger side, all new transmission and engine mounts. The pan was sprayed with POR 15 and then the POR top coat applied and looks great.The inside of the tunnel of the floor pan was coated with Eastwoods undercoating. Then the inside of the pan was done with Lizard Skin. The VW tar boards were not installed as they do a poor job of actually protecting the metal and sound proofing the car. The pan top and bottom were done with POR 15. Lizard Skin is sprayed on and it is very durable.
The front torsion tube assembly was replaced with a new German one. There are all new upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends and steering damper, and new torsion tube seals.There is a new steering box as well.
Every rubber piece on the car was replaced form the dust seals that seal the heater box cables to the small little rubber plug in the gas door. Most all the rubber comes form Wolfsburg West or West Coast Metric. If it is supposed to be there, it is there and its new!
The convertible top frame was sprayed with POR 15 and POR Top Coat. The wood header piece was replaced and the smaller wood piece in the back. All parts came form Chucks Convertible Parts in VA. The top received new padding kit, headliner, Haartz cloth top (not the standard vinyl) with all gaskets and new aluminum striker plates. It was installed by a professional convertible top installer.
The paint was done at Superior Auto Body in Pinellas Park FL ($8328.00) which turned out excellent. Then everything was undercoated inside the body, the convertible supports, and inside the doors. (Product was Eastwood Amber Undercoating).
The chrome around the windows was all done at Metal Refinishing in Tampa, FL. the chrome was in good shape, and the window frames are brass ($1120.00), The German square weave carpet is from Wolfsburg West along with the rubber floor mats, all which is the highest quality.
I have a thick file with all receipts which add up to over $50,000.00. The restoration was about a 3 year project. The little custom one wheel trailer goes with the car.
