Cool Classics: Chevrolet Chevelle

Chevrolet introduced the Chevelle in 1963 as a 1964 model. Though quite large by today's standards, it was classified as a midsize car. What wasn't midsize was the level of passion garnered from the very beginning, a passion that has continued for decades.

Classic Car Overview

Cool professional build with a lot of performance. 427 cubic inch Chevy V8 with EFI. 5-speed manual transmission. 4-wheel disc brakes. Beautiful paint and interior. The Chevelle you ve always wanted to build, available for a fraction of the price!

The great thing about the Chevy Chevelle is that it can be almost anything. Stock show piece with matching numbers? Sure. Drag strip terror? Of course. And in cases like this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible, it s a cool resto-mod with vintage big block power and a few modern touches to make it feel up-to-date. The sizzling Bright Blue Metallic paint practically leaps off the gorgeous Chevelle bodywork, showing a depth and a brilliance that the original enamel just couldn t match. Take a look down the sides and you ll see that they spent a lot of time blocking the bodywork to get it smooth and straight, and all the body lines are quite good. A set of bright white SS stripes add to the aggressive attitude, and it wears SS396 emblems, even though they re not quite telling the full story (more on that in a moment). Much of the chrome and stainless trim is new, so it shines like jewelry against the brilliant blue paint, and we appreciate the stock-ish look that s free of cowl-induction hoods and ridiculous wings. This is a clean Chevelle that lets the hardware do the talking.

Inside you get an all-new white interior that is the right choice on a car that s going to spend a lot of time in the sun. Correct door panels and seat covers replicate the 1969 look, and new black carpets match the dash, so it s not white overload. A wood-rimmed wheel adds warmth, and while the original gauges cover the basics, an auxiliary tachometer and trio of dials monitoring oil pressure, temperature, and voltage have been added to keep a closer eye on the big block under the hood. You will also note the digital touch-screen setup for the Holley Sniper EFI system, so you can fine-tune the engine on the fly, although it works pretty well as it sits, so there s probably no need to do any fiddling. The stereo has been upgraded to a potent Kenwood head unit feeding speakers throughout the interior, plus a subwoofer in the trunk, so it sounds great top up or top down. And yes, there are five gears showing on the white cue-ball knob for the Hurst shifter, which is bolted to a Tremec 5-speed underneath. The white power convertible top is also new and fits beautifully, so it latches down without a fit and seals up reasonably well. The car also includes a matching white boot for a finished look. The trunk is finished in correct spatter paint and includes a full-sized spare.

The badges say 396 but under the hood today lives a 427 cubic inch V that s been upgraded to deliver substantially more power than any of the stock Chevelle motors. With the aforementioned Holley Sniper EFI system, it s docile and easy to drive, starting easily and idling nicely hot or cold. But the hardware definitely delivers, including a set of aluminum cylinder heads, a reasonably stout camshaft, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and a set of beautiful long-tube headers that handle the exhaust. Supporting hardware includes a massive aluminum radiator up front, power steering and brakes, twin electric fans, and electronic ignition. The thumping big block twists the Tremec 5-speed, which has a tall overdrive gear for easy highway cruising, and a 12-bolt rear end with what we believe are 3.73 gears inside so it s quite punchy. You ll note the floors are quite clean, the rockers are unmarked, and aside from a few minor signs of use, the undercarriage is extremely clean and issue-free. The exhaust system features Flowmaster mufflers for that distinctive soundtrack, and a set of double-adjustable coil-olver shocks holds up the rear end to improve handling. There s also a new gas tank, 4-wheel disc brakes, and those gorgeous staggered Ridler wheels, which carry 245/45/18 front and 275/35/20 rear Firestone radials.

Documentation includes some receipts from the build.

Beautifully built with an eye towards keeping the Chevelle s soul intact, it very much feels like a vintage muscle car. However, the details like a 5-speed, disc brakes, and the fuel injection neatly fix the areas where traditional muscle cars often come up short. It does everything well, and it s simply gorgeous to look at. If you ve been looking for a cool Chevelle built to cruise, this is a great choice. Call today!
