This cars been the recipient of a frame off restoration that took place over six years and much of the sheet metal was replaced with either old new stock or authentic parts from donor cars. The engine and transmission were rebuilt and the interior, vinyl roof, power steering, power brakes and radio were all replaced. Along with some awards and recognition from the AACA in the form of a Jr win, the cars won numerous first place trophies. Exterior And speaking of first place, the car wears a two stage coat of Olympic Gold which is a fine color for the car, sandwiched by the black vinyl top and black tires wrapped around 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels with black inserts for a tasteful color combination. A band of black trim connects the distinct tail lights and the coveted SS badge sits center, while oval exhaust tips denote this car means business. Up front, square bezels with round corners envelop each of the four headlights flanking a heavily segmented grille over a beautiful chrome bumper that takes in the marker lights down low. That fine chrome is in line with the quality of all the metal trim on the car, in great shape. The vinyl top and paint are also excellent, and it doesnt take long to realize why this car has racked up so many awards. We could not find any glaring exterior imperfections. Interior Clean black vinyl door panels have multiple width ribbed sections and of course, a small SS badge leading to a near flawless split bench with headrests and decorative buttons on the back, a style that continues on the back bench where belts are provided for three occupants. The black steering wheel leads to a fairly typical instrument cluster for the era with a large speedometer to 120mph, and most other functions, including tachometer, stacked in the right dial. Simple, basic and clean is how we find the center stack with just a vent panel and AM radio, while black loop carpet coats the floor protected by Chevelle mats. Up above, the headliner is not unlike what would have rolled off the showroom floor in 69. A spare tire and period plaid mat occupy the spotless trunk. Drivetrain An orange block is the basis for the 396ci L35 V8, rated at 325 horsepower which is linked to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear 12 bolt with a stamping for 3.07 gears and Positraction. The engine was rebuilt with new bearings, .030 over, KB pistons, a high performance Comp cam, and the heads were ported and polished. The bay is kitchen counter clean, and chrome valve covers pop against the orange iron and everything else looks factory fresh. The distinctive gold power booster is in there too, backing up the front disc and rear drum brakes. Undercarriage If youre into clean undercarriage, this one will likely take your breath away. Call it showroom condition, factory fresh, or minty mint, its almost too good to drive this car on anything but carpet! Suspension here is made up of coil springs in the front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back. Drive-Ability Dont let the commuter car split bench seat fool you, this is a muscle car through and through. And thats made immediately evident upon start up, as the raucous V8 emits a healthy burble from the two pipes out back.
