History of the Z28's First 25 Years

Z28 is the most famous Chevrolet RPO code ever. No other option code has become so synonymous with high performance. Other option codes have been used for well-known packages such as Z22 and Z27, but the option names/descriptions became famous, not the RPO number.

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

Classic Car Overview

1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Resto Mod - Frame Off Restoration - Professionally Built 520ci/740hp V8 - Vintage Air - Hugger Orange with Black Interior - 12 Bolt Posi Rear End - 93 Pump Gas - True SS Car (Please note: If you happen to be viewing this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS on a website other than our Garage Kept Motors site, its possible that youve only seen some of our many photographs of the car due to third-party website limitations. The 69 Camaro is now and forever the most cherished muscle car ever made. Car and Driver, August 2011 Car and Driver is far from alone in hailing the 1969 Camaro. Internet automotive site, thedrive.com, weighed in with: The 69 Camaro is the most loved car in America. What accounts for this level of passion? Car and Driver again: This model years combination of classic beauty, tidy size, and ample under-hood space makes it a favorite starting point for tuners and collectors. GM vice-president of global design Ed Welburn not only owns one, he all but cloned the 69 Camaro to renew Chevys fight with the immortal Ford Mustang. It seems the urge to improve on the late-sixties technology is almost irresistible, because as thedrive.com put it: ... leaving the 69 Camaro in pristine, factory-sealed condition is boring. The true RS/SS 69 Camaro offered here is an excellent example of the breed. While the cars appearance is stunning in clear-coated Hugger Orange paint complemented with twin wide black racing stripes, the modifications incorporated during its frame-off restoration take the car to a new, 740-horsepower level. Performance mattered in the build. The perfect exterior paint finish is the result of the professional application of seven coats of clear on a rust-free body. There are no flaws. (Close-up photos in the gallery show the amazing finish.) Underside of the hood and trunk lid, and all door surfaces are all properly painted. The front chin spoiler and the black rear-fascia panel are correctly painted black. The twin black stripes beautifully emphasize the Camaros cowl-induction hood and the rear-deck spoiler. Chrome trim-including window surrounds, door handles, wheel-well trim, grille and taillight trim, rear-fender trim, and both bumpers-is all in excellent condition. Factory badging is all correctly mounted: SS emblems in the front grille and on the rear fascia, Camaro script hood emblem, 396 front-fender badges, and Camaro SS badges behind the front wheel wells. Cabin glass and lighting lenses, including on the headlights (with electrically powered covers), are clear and undamaged. American Racing Torque Thrust, 5-spoke, 17-inch chrome wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich g-force performance tires. Inside, most of the cars stock appointments remain. Black vinyl seat upholstery and stock door trim have been returned to original. The cars headliner, door panels and black cabin carpeting all show beautifully. The original, 3-spoke, bowtie-logo sport steering wheel with brushed-metal trim frames the stock instrument cluster (instrument lenses are cloudy). VintageAir air conditioning has been fitted. Four white-faced engine-monitoring gauges have been added to the forward center console in front of the shift lever for the automatic transmission. (MSD digital ignition components have been mounted in the glove compartment.) Under the hood, a professionally built, 520-cubic-inch V8 producing 740 horsepower is a very impressive presence. A chrome air-cleaner cover (sitting atop the Demon 4-barrel carburetor), braided-steel fuel lines, brushed-metal valve covers, billet-aluminum hardware, and custom intake manifold all add interest. Other components-including the air-conditioning system, aluminum radiator, and massive exhaust headers-are also mounted. Wiring and hoses are correctl
