With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.
The story of the ZL1 Camaro, fitted with that rarest of the rare, all-aluminum 427 big-block V-8, is one that has often been told: How only 69 were made, how they exploited the GM option-ordering system, and how they've become the Camaro guy's ultimate Camaro.
Classic Car Overview
Youll note that we have a hard time keeping early Camaros in stock, particularly ultra-clean ones like this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS coupe. With that in mind, if youre looking for one with a snarling small block, awesome interior, a few choice upgrades, and a look that dares other cars to race, perhaps you should call now because this one has it all. 1969 Camaros are quite possibly our #1 best-sellers for good reason: they look positively awesome. You want street cred? An F-body is a great way to get it. You want front-row parking at the next cruise night? This Blue Metallic RS coupe will deliver. It keeps with the factory formula, since its hard to improve on the timeless design (even the factory copied it four decades later), but the execution is very good. The paint is recent and hugs some very straight sheetmetal that has enjoyed the ministrations of some talented body men. Theres the usual cowl-induction hood, as well as spoilers fore and aft, plus painted and cleared dark blue SS stripes just in case you thought this car isnt arresting enough. Bright chrome bumpers flank the car at both ends, adding a shiny bit of punctuation to the all-blue storyline. The brightwork and trim is also in excellent condition, giving it a grown-up look that works rather well with the bold stripes and sparkling wheels. Step inside the car and youll quickly see that this Camaro has been thoroughly restored top-to-bottom. The factory buckets wear fresh vinyl seat covers and the door panels are in great shape, too. The center console is nicely woodgrained for a touch of sophistication and carries our all-time favorite shifter, the GM horseshoe. Factory gauges remain in the super-clean vinyl-and-woodgrain dash, and youll note from the Astro Ventilation vents that this car was likely originally equipped with factory A/C, which remains an R12 system and cools very effectively. A set of auxiliary gauges are installed to the drivers left, and a period-correct AM/FM/8-track stereo fits neatly in the original slot and fills the cabin with period-correct tunes. Out back the ultra-clean trunk offers a nice reproduction mat and a full-size spare on a Rallye wheel. Horsepower comes easy thanks to a built 327 cubic inch V8 with an aggressive tone. Edelbrock supplied the Performer RPM intake manifold, Holley supplied the 670CM 4-barrel carburetor, and MSD the distributor and coil. Chevy Orange paint on the block keeps it looking right under the hood, and a bit of dress-up never hurts, including the finned valve covers and chrome open-element air cleaner. Theres a new alternator, new fuel pump, new hoses, and a fresh master cylinder and brake booster so you know its ready to run. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission provides easy cruising and quick reflexes, and powers a 10-bolt rear end that doesnt mind the small blocks power. Power steering allows for two-finger driving during longer cruises, and power front disc brakes bring the whole smoke-show to a stop. Hedman long-tube headers dump into a dual exhaust system with Flo-Pro mufflers, so it has an awesome voice, and it remains quite clean underneath thanks to years of conscientious ownership and clean living. Slick 17-inch REV wheels sparkle against the blue paint and wear 225/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear performance radials. Its a 69 Camaro RS and its beautifully finished, so it wont last long.
