VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

My dad bought this 1968 Porsche 912 brand new in June of 1968 from a Porsche dealership in Buena Park, CA.

The car has lived its entire life in Southern California and has always been garaged. Its not a restored show car, its an honest, well-kept driver that still reflects its history.

One-owner car (my dad bought it new), California car its entire life, always garaged, with about 144k miles on the chassis. The car was maintained for many years by the same mechanic in Orange County, and more recently we've put a lot into making sure it runs and drives the way it should.

We just went through the car in February 2026 at Black Forest Automotive in San Diego to address drivability items and give it a proper service. This included a valve adjustment and major service, oil and filter change, carburetors removed, rebuilt and tuned, new fuel tank, updated fuel lines, ignition system checked and set, along with a full inspection and road test. Total was about $4,600 and the car now runs strong and pulls cleanly.

A few years back we did a more extensive round of work at Makellos Classics totaling around $25k. This included an engine reseal and internal engine work (pistons/cylinders and valve-related work), carburetor rebuild, fuel system refresh, full brake overhaul (pads, rotors, calipers, lines and hoses), shift linkage and tunnel work, pedal box rebuild, engine and transmission mounts, and ignition system components. Receipts are included.

In addition to the mechanical work, we've taken care of a few interior items as well. The original seats were recently fully reupholstered, the headliner was replaced, and the car has new tires with less than 200 miles on them.

The car presents as a solid driver. Paint is older and shows some imperfections but still looks good overall. The body is straight with good panel fit. Interior is clean and refreshed where needed while still keeping its original feel. Engine bay is complete and clean. Ive tried to show everything clearly in the photos so there are no surprises.

A couple notes: the engine is not the original, it was replaced in the late 1980s with another 912 engine. The car has a driver-quality patina, and was repainted original bahama yellow in the 1990s. I also have extra parts that will go with the car, which are shown in the photos.

This has been in our family for nearly 60 years, so its not an easy decision. Id like to see it go to someone who appreciates what it is and will take care of it.

If you have questions or want to see anything specific, just let me know.
