Classic Car Overview

1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible In early 1963 a team of engineers and designers got together at Pontiac and decided to focus more on street racing and power. The Tempest had been in production for a bit, and a more muscular powerful car was needed. Hence the acronym GTO or Grand Tempest Option became the code for the secret new development that would take place. John DeLorean actually claims the GTO came from the Italian Gran Turismo Omologato or Grand Touring Homologated (certified) which in reality the car was never meant for grand touring, but to be the fastest straight-line Pontiac produced. In the collector car market, authenticity commands big respect. Nearly every major club grades on how correct restorations are, and the price of largely original metal continues to climb. After all, the factory only bolts it together once, and that brand of perfection is usually the state in which enthusiasts create their fondest memories. This awesome GTO mixes that golden feeling of authenticity with a regiment of selective restoration. Heres your fully documented ticket to the glorious, octane-fueled past! Exterior 4267 denotes a 2-Door Convertible, and the G tells us its April Gold, with a black interior and black top. All correct, all in great condition. A third bump on the hood reveals a hood tachometer option installed. Trunk is pristine and correct, and all outside panels are straight and create good gaps. A slight chip on both sides of the bar that spans horizontally below the grille can be noted. Also, a small frown on the passenger side headlight covering does not align with the remainder of the grille. The power convertible top works flawlessly and is in very good condition. Rally II wheels cover it on the corners of the car. Interior Black buckets with vertical pleats make up the front passenger seating, and a rear bench same pattern also in vinyl stretches across the back. All seats proudly display front and rear seat belts, and shoulder belts in front, direct from the factory. Authentic Pontiac rubber floor mats protect the ever so slightly faded black carpeting. Dash is all crack free, straight and true, and houses an AM/FM/8 track radio, and rally gauge cluster with a rally clock, which sadly is not working. On the matching vinyl covered interior door panels, one can see the toggles for the power windows. Also, the convertible top, as noted, is power, as well as the steering and brakes. A center console all the rage with the sedan muscle, is being flanked by the two front buckets. The Hurst shifter with walnut knob sits between the seats in front of the vinyl console. Also, a rally steering wheel is attached. Drivetrain All muscle no nonsense 400ci V8 that produces 350hp sits within the engine bay. Consigner states it is not a numbers matching engine, however he has the matching numbers engine, as well as not having any idea as to why exactly the original owner took it out? A 4-speed manual transmission is attached to the rear of the engine, and as noted has a Hurst shifter. Slight surface rust, and plenty of patina cover the engine. Undercarriage Noted is surface rust, however it is otherwise unremarkable. No bad through rusting or structural integrity flaws what-so-ever. Also seen are power disc brakes in front, and power drum brakes in the rear. Overall clean and well maintained. Sometimes the best classics are the ones that speak softly. No blower sticking through the hood, no gaudy rims on a bagged chassis and no wild graphics. Just a clean, classy and well-constructed muscle car that was purpose-built to look good and perform great. Featuring timeless style, excellent hardware and modern comfort, this slick Pontiac represents the best of everything, including plenty of get-up n GTO!
