Description:
1968 Plymouth Fury III 4 Door Hardtop

HAS TITLE

For auction, a 1968 Plymouth Fury III 4 door hardtop showing 8,038 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Quite a bit of rust on this barn find condition car, which is otherwise original and retains a 318ci V8 under the hood that runs. Though the car moves, it does not have brakes.

ExteriorThere are shades of greatness here as the car must have been a gleaming example delivered to a new owner in 1968, wearing Ember Gold Poly on its long panels. Emblematic 60's design includes right angles at every corner and upright features at both ends including a nicely designed grille between stacked headlights, and rectangular tail lights that are as much part of the center panel as the ornamental aluminum. Unique wheel covers are all in place, weathered quite a bit but you have a matching set! The black vinyl top that once capped this beauty is tattered, toasty and torn from exposure and the body and trim have some issues too. The paint shows lots of patina and the body has a good bit of rust, or missing lengths of metal altogether. What Derek from Vice Grip Garage would call weight saving and a lot of it is from the bottom up although there are top surfaces that are rusted through.

InteriorOverall, the four black vinyl door panels are in decent shape, especially the back two which remain fully intact. We can't say the same about the front split bench and the rear bench, both of which must have been amazing back in the day but are now mere remnants of their former glory. The steering wheel and wildly unique instrument cluster and dash show some age but it seems to be all there including an AM radio, while the dash pad itself tells the story of long days in the sun. The gray carpet also shows age and the perforated headliner above is in standout condition compared to the rest of the interior. As you would expect, the trunk has rust, along with some spare parts.

DrivetrainUnder the hood is the compact 318ci V8 with a single 2-barrel carburetor in barn find condition. It was rated at 230 horsepower and is backed by an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 8 3/4 rear and we're heading down to see if it's still intact! The car is equipped with power brakes and power steering.

UndercarriageThe differential is still intact but much of the underside is not. We said the car rusted from the bottom up and it didn't bypass the underside as panels and frame show a good bit of invasive rust. Components include power drum brakes at all four wheels and a single exhaust through a stock style muffler and we're happy to report the exhaust is in good shape! Suspension includes torsion bars up front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-AbilityThe car runs and moves but has no brakes. The 215/75R14 tires have a late 2013 date code.

Here you have a running 318 and some usable parts we can only assume are now rare as you don't find many Fury III's around anymore. They've either been restored to the hilt or returned to the earth. This one is not ready to give up the ghost and might be willing to be an organ donor!
