From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Great bones this muscle car needs a GREAT home!
This sleek 2-door hard top is an automatic with black interior, sequential turn signals, and folding headlights with an “electric razor” grill. In the late 60’s, this model was SO luxurious and though the front seat and headliner needs help, they are original. It even has a factory 8-track tape deck and a handful of tapes!
The factory color was a muted lime green, but it had been repainted before it came into my family in the early 80’s. The paint certainly shows the signs of use and age, but that doesn’t diminish the great lines and looks of a car that has led a pretty good life even it if could use some TLC today. Most of the chrome is in very good shape, though the rear bumper needs to be repaired or replaced.
In 2014, we had extensive work done including dropping in a brand new 302 V8 engine (plus dealt with the manifolds, cooling & heating system, transmission, exhaust and shocks).
My mom bought this car in Los Angeles in 1982 when I was just two years old and my car seat barely fit into the sporty back seat. She drove it home to Wisconsin later that year and a few years later my dad did some repairs, added some speakers, and drove it once it awhile. After his death in 1990, my step-mom told me that he had fixed it up and put it in storage for me: a gift that was from both of my birth parents. I have had the Cougar with me in Michigan since 2005.
Most of the last 20 years, the Cougar has been waiting for a
break out moment to become the shiny classic it can be. Over the last year, I have really come to
understand that I just don’t have the time and energy to restore the car as it
should be. It’s time to find someone
who will LOVE this car as much as we have and will turn it into the showpiece
it can be!
