Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Amelia Island event, 6 - 7 March 2020.
$175,000 - $225,000

  • The ultimate iteration of the classic Mercedes-Benz cabriolet
  • The final-series, hand-built production model
  • Only 1,390 examples built during the production run from 1968 71
  • Retains its matching-numbers engine, transmission, and rear axle
  • Accompanied with factory data card, owners manuals, original service book, and delivery booklets
  • Marque expert restoration; an exceptional and highly collectable example

Mercedes-Benzs elegant Paul Bracq designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced, in its many variations, through 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the two-door models the 280 SE cabriolet and coupe which were expensive, virtually hand-built automobiles in the great tradition of German craftsmanship. The acres of wood trim throughout the interior were all genuine solid hardwood, accented by the gentle use of brightwork; the leather upholstery was thick and comfortable, and both the ride quality and handling were superb. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these cars rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising around the worlds most posh destinations.

According to factory documents, this 280 SE cabriolet was delivered to its first owner in New York, New York. A left-hand-drive, U.S. production example, the car was finished in a tasteful black exterior over a Cognac leather interior with a beige top. Further, it was optioned with interior leather trim, an automatic transmission, Becker radio, thin whitewall tires, and heat-absorbing glass. Currently, the 280 SE presents beautifully throughout. In recent years it was the recipient of a marque-expert restoration. The car was restored in factory-original colors and now features a black Haartz cloth convertible top. Accompanying the cabriolet is a host of original accessories, including the owners manuals, stamped service book, delivery booklets, and copy of the Mercedes-Benz data card.

Showing less than 62,250 original miles and presented with its matching-numbers engine, transmission, and rear axle, this exceptional example presents the rare opportunity to acquire an extremely high-quality cabriolet. It would be a delight to drive for any enthusiast seeking to enjoy top-down motoring in supreme comfort. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am20.
