1968 Ford Mustang Convertible For your consideration, a 1968 Mustang in Sunlit Gold that caught the eye of our consignor, who is lucky enough to be the second owner of this proud pony. He was able to obtain this drop top from the original owner in November of 2020 and the car has remained nearly all original inside and out as well as carrying a mere 57,166 title verified actual miles. As luck would have it the original owner did a wonderful job of preserving not only the car, but the original window sticker, build sheet, sales invoice, and a copy of the original title, talk about a near perfect papertrail! Read on and get ready to pony up for this near once in a lifetime opportunity. Exterior Unrestored with only very minor rust bubbling and a few small scrapes mainly reserved for the lower panels the factory applied Sunlit Gold covers this straight body with well minded gaps. We note a tear free black canvas convertible top with a glass rear window adding just the right contrast when in the raised position. Our consignor stated that this paint is all original, and were included to agree with the exception of some color blend work on the drivers rear quarter panel. We note a dent just forward of this blend, leading us to believe there may have been some very minor crash damage at some point in the past. Complete with the iconic mustang hockey stick cove that ends just in front of the rear wheels and a stainless rocker trim panel with black tape stripes above for some extra bling, this Mustang draws our eyes to it from a mile away. 15-inch chrome laden Magnum 500 wheels round out that package and are wrapped in medium whitewall rubber from the 46th week of 2020. Pencil thin bumpers dress the front and rear of this sure footed pony with a deeply inset grille and hovering corraled horse up front and in the back is an inward v-shaped tail panel with individual vertical tail light lenses. Interior A swing of the door and we are met with front bucket seats and a rear bench that shine like the showroom and welcome you to get in and drive. These are finished in the correct and original black crinkle inserts and kiwi bolsters, both vinyl. A chrome T handle floor shifter with new bushings proudly sits within a black plastic console that has receivers for the inboard seat belts. This console races up to the dash where it meets with a roll up storage compartment door and a modern AM/FM radio, all within a black padded vinyl background. An original and very clean dash fronts the new for 1968 collapsible steering column. The dash contains its original instrument cluster, now with LED lights, and retains the still in use today dual bump up dash pad. Black steel and vinyl make up the door panels and are looking just fab with their new chrome door handles and window cranks. Black Mustang logoed floor mats protect the carpet which shows with some age and sunfade. Drivetrain The correct 289ci V8 resides within the original and unrestored engine bay. Under the large blue air cleaner assembly is a rebuilt 2-barrel carburetor on top and then the icing on the cake is seen with new belts, hoses, and a rebuilt radiator. On the back is the correct C4 3-speed automatic and putting power to the ground is a Ford 8 2.79 conventional axle assembly. Undercarriage Up in the air we are greeted with an unrestored and used undercarriage that presents with no invasive rust and only minor surface rust on the suspension components. Drum brakes are seen all around and single exhaust sends spent fossils through a stock style muffler to announce the V8s melody. All good down below with independent coil springs suspension up front and leaf spring suspension in the rear. Drivability One of the rites of summer here at the Classic Auto Mall is getting to cruise the test track with the top down and this car did not disappoint. On the track the car performed flawlessly and handled everything we threw at it. All functions were operational and at the risk of a mild sunburn to the ever balding domes of mine and my crack decoders head we took a few extra parade laps just for giggles. Unrestored, 2 owners, an original interior, gobs of paperwork, and a paltry 57,166 miles galloped on this pony make for a rarity in our Hallowed Halls. A few minor repairs could be made to make this horse showroom fresh but at the cost of losing the originality. Regardless of the choice, this car can offer you years of top down smiles and all the notoriety that ownership of a classic Mustang brings. 8T03C209086 8-1968 T-Metuchen, NJ Assy Plant 03-Mustang Convertible C-289ci V8 2bbl 200hp 209086-Sequential Unit Number WARRANTY TAG BODY 63A-Mustang Convertible, Standard Buckets COLOR Y-Sunlit Gold TRIM 2AA-Black Crinkle & Kiwi Vinyl DATE 04F-June 4th DSO 16-Philadelphia AXLE 2-Ford 8 2.79 Gears TRANS W-C4 Automatic Classic Auto Mall is a 336,000-square foot classic and special interest automobile showroom, featuring over 850 vehicles for sale with showroom space for up to 1,000 vehicles.
