Classic Car Overview

1968 Ford Mustang Coupe There is symbolism in that logo in front. The logo of the car is a Mustang horse galloping from right to left. It was created by automotive designer Philip Thomas Clark. The horse has a strong connection to the American West, but the symbolism runs deeper. According to some reports, the horse represents American expansion and freedom. Others say the logo is moving to the left because Clark was right-handed and it was easier for him to draw that way. Either way, and as they say the rest is history! For consignment, a very fine example of a 1968 Mustang. During the restoration, a color change was performed along with plenty of new parts for the exterior, sporty wheels and tires, a rebuilt suspension, and beautiful paint, all powered by a 302ci V8 with less than 4,000 miles on the rebuild, which is not original but better! Have a close look at this one and its binder of receipts for repairs over the years you will be SOLD! Exterior We see the iconic look to this 1968 version now with corraled horse mid gallop coming out for the clean eggcrate grille. All laser straight steel with nicely minded gaps, and bathed in a color change respray of Highland Green, a tasteful color change applied well but with a few imperfections, runs and inclusions. Chrome and trimming look shiny and are new, and right down to the hockey stick cove the trimming which is near perfect. Accentuating the rocker line of the straight steel sides are white GT stripes just above a stainless rocker trim panel. A near perfect black vinyl top covers the roof and adds an air of distinction to this pony. On the back the new rear for this year uses the inward V shaped sergeant stripe taillights. All new chrome and stainless trimming highlights the Highland Green and add in a shiny bumper, large bezels on the roll pan for the backup lights, a chromed badged gas cap in the center, and GT style dual dual exhaust tips and we are good to go. 14-inch Styled Steel wheels are on and wrapped in 235/60R14s all around. Interior A work of art horizontal tuck and roll door panels with a splash of chrome for the highlighting trim, door release and window crank. Moving inside our eyes are drawn to the dash with its dual eyebrow padded black top, aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette player and crinkle finish black panel which houses the factory gauges. These use large shiny bezels to land either side of the steering column, and just above and peppering between these large gauges is a trio of more new gauges, accurate and easy to read. Below is a black painted panel which has the knobs and pulls within it and the climate sliders are to the drivers left and reside in a smaller black panel. Black colored vinyl covers the rarely seen front bench which have been overstuffed and sport a smooth fold down armrest and tuck and roll inserts. We note some tearing of the seat material along with prior repairs accomplished with black tape. The same for the rear bench which remains tear free, which along with the front bench floats in a sea of black carpeting. Also of note is a padded black rimmed steering wheel, and a nice tight headliner also in black. Drivetrain Under the hood now resides a circa 1968 302ci V8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor that was rebuilt approximately 4000 miles ago. This transmits power to the ground through C4 automatic transmission, and an 8-inch rear axle with 2.79 rear gearing. The exhale is courtesy of dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers which gives the 68 Stang a melodious tone. A component of note is factory installed A/C for those hot summer drives. Undercarriage During the restoration the underside of the car was thoroughly repaired with new front torque boxes, floor pans, and floor support rails. Factory power steering is on as is a factory power booster is on for the front disc brakes while the rear braking is power drums. We note all new parts for the brake in the form of new calipers, wheel cylinders, lines, hoses, and parking brake cables along with new steel fuel lines. Independent front suspension is on along with new lower control arms, sway bar bushings and sway bar end links and for the rear we note new leaf springs and traction bars for that extra grip. Drive-Ability As soon as you enter you will realize you are not in your average 1968 Mustang. All very nicely done and a complete throwback to 1968. It fires right up, and on the test track drives like a galloping 302ci dream. Great acceleration, solid handling, and bias free panic stopping. The power steering was a plus as was the power brakes, and I noted all functions operational with the exception of the A/C which our consignor stated did work but most likely has a leak and will need to be recharged. Look at this car from any angle and you will be hard pressed to find many faults. With rust free panels, a rarely seen front bench seat, tons of undercarriage work, an iconic paint hue, lots of receipts and fabulous chrome. Giddy-up!
