Classic Car Overview
1968 Chevrolet Impala - SS Convertible The Chevrolet Impala was introduced in the late 50s and became their most popular flagship passenger vehicle joining the ranks among the best selling American-made cars in the US. The name took inspiration from the graceful antelope from the African plains which was also used as the cars logo. It first premiered at the 1956 GM Motorama show and took features from the Corvette but incorporated them into a larger design. This was a smart plan because while families certainly would admire the Corvette they were by no means a family car with only 2 seats. The Impala came to the rescue as they now had a passenger vehicle that didnt sacrifice style. Overall designs for the Impala rapidly changed as they moved into the 60s with some generations only lasting 1 short year before they were redesigned again. This 1968 belongs to the 4th generation which set an all time industry annual sell record when more than 1 million units were sold in their introductory year, 1965. They now used a X full width perimeter frame, a sharper angled windshield, reshaped vent windows and a redesigned full coil suspension. That being said they did still retain some of the iconic Impala stylings like the dual double headlights and triple taillights which had a horseshoe design exclusive to 68. This car is a true SS convertible and received a full frame-off restoration in 2014 by the previous owner. Since then it has been driven approximately 20,000 miles and has been well cared for. It also includes a matching full size spare. Under the hood is the car is powered by a freshly rebuilt 350 V8 motor. It runs great and has approximately 3,000 miles on it since being redone so should be rock solid for many more miles to come. It is dressed up with chrome valve covers and a 327 Turbo-Fire chrome circle air cleaner. It doesnt smoke and sounds great while not being over bearing with a modest dual exhaust system. From the motor, power is sent through the original Hydramatic 400 transmission to the 10 bolt rear end to get those tires spinning. It has power brakes with discs up front as well as power steering so it is a very comfortable cruiser. The interior has been kept mostly stock and is done in all Black to match the top.
