1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible This beautiful Corvette, with a very nice color combination, graces our halls here at Classic Auto Mall. It stands out as something pretty much original 1968 looking, has a more powerful drivetrain and a slightly modified body. And those nice split chrome bumpers and shiny coke bottle rocker coverings just adds to the exterior Corvette mystique. And its a convertible with an unpainted hardtop that is also available if you should so desire. Exterior A nice Torch Red respray shows very nicely with no checks or cracks, just smooth deep red paint. The sculpted body is highlighted on the front quarters by shark-like gill venting with some chrome accenting which frames the outside of a cowled hood. This hidden headlight grille and a spear like hood bump is long and perfect. A polished stainless rocker cover with a strip of stainless accenting above is reserved for the rockers. Just above the rockers we note the door have been changed to the later 1969 and up style, as they are sans the push button releases. On the back of the curvaceous rear quarters, with some extra flare on the fenders, frame the deep dish 15-inch Hurricane wheels and raised white letter BFG Radial T/A tires from the 11th week of 2016. The rear has a split chromed bumper and 4 round pristine upgraded bullet style tail lights with a central CORVETTE badge. Note, the black convertible top is in fine shape with a clear plastic rear window. Our consignor states this car has a non-painted hardtop that is also available. The look and stance of this year is quickly becoming one of my favs, along with the rounded look of the 76-77 versions. Interior Saddle vinyl in this 1968 model year covers the sleek design thin buckets, clean door panels, and angled dash. This creates a beautiful combination to the exterior red. No fading and very slight wear is seen on the drivers chair, and overall it presents in very good condition. A center console is wrapped in dark brown vinyl for the armrest with the remaining surfaces in the saddle tan. It uses aluminum highlighting as well as some black accenting, and a large black shift knob to set everything off. As it rises to the dash center we see the chromed AM/FM radio and a series of 5 round gauges, some warning lights, and heater vents with the wiper switch on the top all embedded into a black panel. Also, black leather padded wrapped steering wheel adds a nice touch to the overall interior. Carpeting throughout appears as fairly clean original and in gold. Nice deep inset gauges for the driver are clean in the tan field. On the passenger side is a vinyl pouch in lieu of the glovebox. Behind the seats is a storage area covered in gold carpeting which also serves as the storage area for the convertible top. We see some speakers in the corners of this area as well. Drivetrain The consigner states that under the hood is a Summit Racing 383ci V8 stroker mill that produces a purported 420hp but there is no documentation to verify the pony count, and sports less than 300 miles clocked on it. Backing it up is a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission residing in an overall clean engine bay. A 4-barrel carburetor feeds fossils to the mill through an aluminum intake manifold. The rear axle weighs in at a 3.36 ratio. New red high voltage ingestion wires snake their way through this engine from a red distributor cap. Nice rust-free headers are also noted that connect to a Turbo muffler system for the exhale. Undercarriage A gander underside reveals 4-wheel power disc brakes, which are newly installed. A good condition frame and floor construction, as well as a clean suspension. Suspension is fully independent for the front and rear with the front being new and rebuilt. The exhaust is clean and rust free. Drive-Ability I liken this test drive to driving a piece of fine art sculpture, and it performed as it should for the drivetrain. Smooth shifting and definitely one can feel the extra power on this Summit Racing engine. I noticed the reverse lights did not work and there were several rattles while driving from unknown sources. Just a very nice looking, well sorted 1st year C3 Stingray that runs and sounds like it did in 68 only even better. The fender flares, Hurricane wheels and nice paint add to the overall great look. If you are in the market for a well-equipped early Corvette thats ready to cruise, do not hesitate on this one...When the shark bites....! 194678S409319 1-Chevrolet 94-Corvette 67-Convertible 8-1968 S-St. Louis, MO Assy Plant 409319-Sequential Unit Number Classic Auto Mall is a 336,000-square foot classic and special interest automobile showroom, featuring over 850 vehicles for sale with showroom space for up to 1,000 vehicles.
