Classic Car Overview

Celebrity Cars is pleased to offer this 1968 L88 Chevrolet Corvette 1 of 20 L88 convertibles built in 1968 Ownership history Retained by renowned corvette collector for 14 years Listed in L88 registry Soft top and removeable hardtop Displayed at Dana Point Concours and Festival of Speed in St Petersburg, FL Restoration receipts from David Walters restoration Recently finished in original color combination British Green and Saddle interior Produced February 12, 1968 Delivered new to Harte Chevrolet in Meridian, CT F41 suspension, J56 brakes L88 427/430 HP V-8 engine Aluminum heads, radio delete 4-speed transmission Rally wheels with Redline tires Produced at the St. Louis assembly plant on February 12, 1968, and delivered new to Harte Chevrolet in Meridian, Connecticut, this 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 is one of approximately 20 convertible versions built in the second year of its three-year production life. Announced in the spring of 1967, Regular Production Option L88 was the inevitable result of Chevrolets decision to stuff the Mark IV big-block V-8 engine between Corvettes frame rails, especially with engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov in charge of powertrain development. With the 396/425 HP version as the starting point, Arkus-Duntov began to extract increasing power from the Mark IV, and the racing-purposed L88 was his piece de resistance. The fact that skittish Chevrolet management all but denied its existence was high praise indeed for what would become legendary as the purest racing engine ever offered in a Corvette to that time. It featured a specially reinforced block with a forged rotating assembly, 12.5:1 compression, a huge 850 CFM Holley 4-barrel on a large-plenum aluminum intake manifold, a radical high-lift mechanical camshaft actuating large valves in high-flow aluminum heads, and provision for remote oiling. A small-diameter flywheel and heavy-duty clutch connected the L88 to an M22 heavy-duty 4-speed and Positraction differential with hardened axles and u-joints. J56 heavy-duty power brakes, F41 suspension, K66 transistorized ignition, a large crossflow aluminum radiator sans fan shroud and radio-heater delete were all mandatory elements of the L88 package, the latter according to Corvette News to cut down on weight and discourage the cars use on the street. Recently finished in the original color combination of British Green with a Saddle interior, this 1968 L88 convertible was retained by a noted Corvette collector for 14 years. Optioned with both soft top and auxiliary hardtop, Rally wheels and redline tires, it has been displayed at the Dana Point Concours and Festival of Speed in St. Petersburg, Florida. In addition to ownership history, it is accompanied by receipts from its restoration by David Walters and listed in the L88 Registry. The odometer shows 6316 but we dont believe it to be accurate.
