1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

INTRODUCTION: Ridiculously nice, it is the kind of restoration that raises the bar! This authentic Super Sport has undergone an exceptional body-off-frame restoration with outstanding fit, finish, and attention to detail throughout. Finished in its factory Tuxedo Black with striking red accents, correct drivetrain, and factory air conditioning that blows ice cold, its the kind of car that stops people in their tracks. Every inch reflects craftsmanship thats truly above and beyond.

EXTERIOR: This Chevelle is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! Black is one of the most unforgiving colors, and this one is as close to flawless as youll find. The body is laser straight from end to end, with precise, square body gaps and doors that close with a solid click, even with the windows rolled up. Its refinished in its factory Tuxedo Black, upper and lower, without a vinyl top, and the mirror-like finish has incredible depth and gloss. The red SS stripes perfectly complement the reproduction Firestone Wide Oval redline tires. Every piece of chrome and stainless trim has been restored or replaced, along with new weatherstrips, seals, and all new glass. Unique factory features include the rear mounted antenna and bumper guards. Its finished off with pristine rally wheels and correct T3 headlights. Pictures look great, but seeing this car in person is the only way to truly appreciate the quality of the restoration.

INTERIOR: It is just as impressive as the rest of the car with excellent fit and finishes. The classic bench seat lets you slide over and sit close to your sweetheart, while all the upholstery, door panels, armrests, and window cranks have been replaced. Fresh carpet fits beautifully and is protected by reproduction floor mats. The entire dash has been meticulously restored, featuring the original AM radio, a new heater control panel, a full set of factory gauges, and the desirable original barrel tachometer. It also has a new deluxe woodgrain steering wheel. Overhead youll find a new headliner, visors, rearview mirror, and a working dome light. Inside the new glove box is the owners manual, and it retains a complete set of GM seat belts. Its an exceptionally clean, beautifully restored interior that looks ready for the showroom.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Lift the hood and youll find an incredibly detailed engine compartment! At its heart is a correct 396 Turbo-Jet 325 horsepower V8, meticulously detailed in proper Chevy Orange with the correct chrome valve covers, air cleaner, and even reproduction spark plug wires. The brackets, pulleys, and hardware are all restored to like new condition. It features factory power steering with the correct remote reservoir, power brakes with a new master cylinder and stainless steel brake lines, plus factory air conditioning that has been restored and blows cold. The correct radiator, fan shroud, reproduction hoses, and clamps are all in place. Even the horns, underhood insulation, and windshield washer system are complete. Every painted surface is clean and neatly finished, making this a show quality engine bay that looks every bit as good as the rest of the car.

TRUNK COMPARTMENT: It is restored with the same attention to detail as the rest of the car. Under the deck lid and throughout the jamb, everything is spotless. The quarter panels appear to display the factory seams and original part numbers in the jamb. Inside, the metal is clean and dry with a neatly applied factory style spatter finish. The decals, weatherstrip, and trunk mat have all been replaced. Completing the package is a restored 5th matching rally wheel wrapped in a reproduction redline tire, along with a complete jack assembly that appears to be in mint condition.

UNDERSIDE: The body was removed from the frame, and the attention to detail underneath is every bit as impressive as the exterior. In fact, its over restored! The floors, frame, and chassis components are exceptionally clean with a smooth gloss black finish. The suspension and steering have been completely rebuilt, including the correct reproduction spiral shocks. It retains the proper factory style dual exhaust system, which still has a shine. The entire fuel system has been replaced, and the polished fuel tank adds a nice visual touch. The brake system is completely new, featuring optional front disc brakes and a fully functional emergency brake. Looking up at the drivetrain, the correct 396 is spotless in Chevy Orange, backed by a Turbo 400 automatic transmission and the original 12-bolt rear end with 3.08 Posi gears.

CONCLUSION: Ive looked at thousands of muscle cars over the years, and restorations of this caliber are exceptionally rare. You can go look at a hundred others that seem just as nice in pictures, or whose owners claim theyre this good. Go ahead-I believe youll come back to this one. The fit, finish, and overall craftsmanship are in the top one percent, in my opinion. Its incredibly difficult to achieve this level of quality, and this Chevelle stands out as one of the very best.
