Cool Classics: Chevrolet Chevelle

Chevrolet introduced the Chevelle in 1963 as a 1964 model. Though quite large by today's standards, it was classified as a midsize car. What wasn't midsize was the level of passion garnered from the very beginning, a passion that has continued for decades.

Classic Car Overview

1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Convertible The Chevy Chevelle is a vehicle we hold near and dear to our hearts. Its an iconic muscle car that led the pack during its time. If you love the Chevelle as much as we do, youll probably be interested in these fun Chevelle facts: 1. The Chevelle was built in 10 different plants in two countries during its 10 year run. 2. Surprisingly, the Chevelle shared a platform with both the Monte Carlo and the El Camino. 3. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canada that had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called the Pontiac Beaumont. 4. The Chevelle was the intended successor of the Tri-Five but ended up carving out its own place in Chevy history. For consignment, a 1968 version of the Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 maintaining much of its original chutzpah, consignor stated numbers matching drivetrain, factory color respray, and the beneficiary of a frame off restoration for the first go around, then the engine was completely rebuilt for the 2nd go around, and made to run like a newborn cheetah...wait..I meant Chevelle! Exterior This is the year to have for the Chevelle SS396, 1968 and this one is true to form bathed in Frost Green Metallic, which looks just fab and like new. A rakish front grille and dual dual headlights with a trim accentuating that diving down and to the back of the car from the edge of the headlights. This trimming then runs rearward just above the rocker and to the rear wheel well. A larger two pointed spear runs along the beltline and is in white from stem to stern. Above the rocker trimming is a black racing stripe going with the flow of the trimming. The canvas convertible top is also in black, and looking in very good condition. When its down a black contrasting to the exterior Frost paint tonneau covering hides it securely behind the rear bench. Badging is correct, and on the back just below the wide and long rear trunk deck are angled tail lights on either rear quarter with another nice bumper below and some trimming and SS396 badging in between. 14-inch rally wheels are on all 4 corners and are all wrapped in period correct red line tires. Interior Here we gaze upon a factory wood rimmed steering wheel fronting a rally gauge dash sporting a tachometer that redlines at 5500 RPM, an indicator this car is a true SS. Instruments are clean and neatly preserved within a black dash front. Within this interior realm the factory AM/FM radio is neatly installed. To work in conjunction with the stereo is the factory Multiplex equalized hanging below the dash. As for the seating arrangement, nicely curved semi high back buckets with a headrest all in black vinyl, as well as a rear bench is seen in the same pattern in back. A center console is in the center and holds the airplane throttle inspired horseshoe shifter. The dash top is padded black shiny vinyl totally un-marred. Below flooding the floors is a black carping which remains like new and very clean condition. Drivetrain By the numbers a factory 396ci V8. The engine number shows a 1968/69 396ci V8. The serial number and T0404FT shows a Tonawanda NY 1968 396ci V8 4bbl automatic application from April 4th of 1968. On top is a single 4bbl carb, and on back is a 12 bolt 3.07 Posi with correct numbers. The transmission is a TH400 3-speed automatic and shows a parietal vin stamping, although the tag on the Hydromatic is correct for an L35 SS396 325hp car. Our consignor states this is a numbers matching engine and transmission but the jury remains deadlocked on the verdict as the numbers look slightly suspect, so you be the judge. Undercarriage Just a great job on the restoration of the undercarriage, straight rust free black painted steel frame, black floor pans, and suspension which is noted to have Hotchkis sway bars and bushings. Brakes are power disc for the front and power drums for the rear. A dual exhaust with stainless steel mufflers is aiding the exhale form the 396 cubes. Drive-Ability A smile on my muscle car partner in crime aficionados face says it all after his test drive. He Likes It!..Hey Mikey...He reported a quick fire up, good handling, solid braking, and awe inspiring acceleration. It was like being in an all new 1968 car. The clock is not working, and the low beams are inoperable. If you are in the market for a nice Chevelle SS396 from this Muscle era, then this is certainly a turn key adventure for you. All the work has been meticulously performed, and get in and go. Its that easy, and youll be looking great to boot, all in Seafrost green, AND its a convertible. 138678B188245 1-Chevrolet 38-SS396 67-Convertible 8-1968 B-Baltimore, MD Assy Plant 188245-Sequential Unit Number TRIM TAG 04D-4th Week April ST 68 13867-1968 SS396 Convertible BDY BAL00933-Baltimore Body # TR 766-Black Imitation Leather Buckets PNT P2-Seafrost Green, Black Top
