1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE: The Original Factory Racer

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

Classic Car Overview

And quite as rare, and not nearly as valuable as the original but this one has some superpower under the hood...a consignor stated 427ci V8 with lots of goodies much like the original. Built to exacting standards with many authentic and NOS parts, this nut and bolt build was wrapped up approximately a year ago and now is ready to be enjoyed. You can even drive this one every day as it can sit in traffic and god forbid if something happens just get it fixed. All wrapped up and looking amazingly just like the original, and when shown it is very difficult to discern that this indeed is a tribute car. Exterior With this unassuming original Camaro look, you may pass it right by, however upon closer inspection, that Butternut Yellow in beautiful condition, miles deep and buffed to perfection, sports some correct Yenko badges in the form of a red white and blue shield on the fenders along with the Camaro SS badging just below. These badges are split by the half wrap nose stripe in black that crosses the header panel, dives down the fenders and makes an abrupt turn rearward, gently diminishing to a point at the rear of each door. The correct Yenko dual scooped hood resides between the fenders and leads back to the clean passenger compartment glass which is highlighted by the flawless black vinyl roof. Beautiful stainless trimmings surround this roof and fore and aft chrome bumpers are excellent. A small spoiler resides just above the blacked out and badge bedecked tail panel which also holds the standard issue tail lights. Just below is the rear roll pan equipped with snappy add-on bumper guards. The paint presents at the deep end of the pool and gaps are well maintained throughout with nary a sign of rust to be seen. Correct 14 Pontiac Rally II wheels adorn the corners and are wrapped in red stripe BF Goodrich 215/70R14 radials. Interior Fully restored, it is hard to find any fault on this interior. Nice black door panels have shiny cranks, blingy delineation strips, nifty black padded vinyl armrest in the center. Beautiful bomber style low back buckets are draped in black vinyl floating in a sea of unmarked nice black carpet. The carpeting covers the hump between the clean buckets and a Hurst shifter is poking its wand up from the sea of black and is ready to stir some gears. A simple dash hangs above said and sports a trio of Yenko SW gauges, the factory AM radio, and chrome heater slides. In front of the driver is the factory correct black plastic SS badged 3 spoke steering wheel atop a fixed position column. This fronts the deeply inset duo of gauges with the speedometer on the left and fuel gauge on the right. A Yenko SW tachometer is just to the right and down low of the factory cluster. A tight black headliner hangs above and displays well with the working dome light. Drivetrain The real treat of this tribute lies under the dual scooped hood. The star of the show is a 427ci V8 bathed in its reddish/orange glory. This mighty mill produces a consignor stated 450+hp thanks in part to the aluminum intake manifold and 4bbl carburetor perched atop. Chrome is on dressing up the valve covers and air cleaner assembly lid and we note correct clamps for the supple hoses throughout the bay. Backing up this beautifully done engine is a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission which sends power back to a 12 bolt rear axle weighing in with a 3.73 ratio and Positraction. Undercarriage Stunningly clean and beautiful underneath with jet black frame, floor pans, rust free suspension, and like new dual exhaust. Our consignor states that during the build the original floor pans and truck pan were retained as they were rust free. Independent coil springs suspension for the front, and leaf springs for the rear. Power disc brakes are up front, and power drums are on the rear. Ceramic coated headers and Flowmaster mufflers assist with the exhale and are looking nearly new. Drive-Ability This car is a handful for sure and compounding this are the narrow tires, but once accustomed to the acceleration this car drives and handles nicely considering the power. The car accelerated at a breakneck pace and stopped nicely. We noted that the front parking lights and tail lights did not illuminate and the horn did not blow, otherwise it was a great ride that may or may not have caused a small streak in my Hanes. Sometimes in life the original is not attainable. Whether it be due to scarcity, price, or geolocation, all is not lost. Inventive builders, such as our consignor, have you covered with tribute cars. All the wow-factors of the original but this one in particular with more power, a near flawless build execution and a perfect undercarriage. No fear of devaluing or ruining an original, you better hurry up and make your move and this one wont last long and will soon be adorning another muscle car lovers garage. Id certainly love to receive this in my trick or treat bucket. 124378N484457 1-Chevrolet 24-Camaro V8 37-2 Door Hardtop Sport Coupe 8-1968 N-Norwood, OH Assy Plant 484457-Sequential Unit Number TRIM TAG 03B-2nd Week March Build ST 68 12437-1968 Camaro 2 Door Hardtop Sport Coupe BDY NOR94089-Norwood Body # TR 712-Standard Black Vinyl Buckets PNT Y2-Butternut Yellow, Black Top
