1968 AMC AMX
Car for sale by Classic Car Studio in Saint Louis, Missouri 63144
From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Introduced in 1968, the short wheelbase muscle car known as the AMX was cooked up by AMC to bring a younger audience into the showrooms. It was the first steel-bodied American two-seater since the Thunderbird and often noted by the press as a competitor to the Corvette.
Finished in Blue over a Saddle interior, this factory X code 390CI/4 Speed AMX was a lifelong desert car prior to restoration. The condition of the metal is impeccable for its age and all of the original factory spot welds are visible. The floorboards were never undercoated and have been refinished in the factory blue hue. The paint is a modern base/clear application and has been sanded and buffed. The stainless trim is refinished original metal, and all of the rubber seals have been replaced. The glass is in good original condition with the exception of the windshield which is new.
The interior has the original vinyl which is in very good condition and the AMX has new carpeting throughout. Unlike many of these AMX’s, this car has an all-new wiring harness and everything is in good functioning order. The gauges have been rebuilt, as it the radio. The air conditioning is in good working order on the car and blows cold!
Mechanically the car has been gone through from front to rear. The drive train has been rebuilt and the car runs strong and cool! Unlike other muscle cars from this era, it is not possible to link the engine and transmission to the serial number of the car, so “matching numbers” just is not a thing on these cars. Although, from the VIN number, we know that to be a factory 390/4 speed car.
Weighing in well under 3000, lbs, this AMX flies with the 390 engine! She’s a peach to drive with power steering/power brakes and is quite the looker in this color combination. For the AMX enthusiast looking for a well-preserved car that’s been nicely restored, this car is should be your pick.
