Classic Car Overview

The Cobra was not the only pioneering American-powered British roadster created by Carroll Shelby. At the behest of British automaker Sunbeam, Shelby created the Tiger based on their gorgeous slab-sided Alpine roadster, noted for offering more comfort than other British sports cars of its era and having a high measure of style. Shelby solved the underpowered Sunbeams problems with the installation of a small-block Ford V-8 and a four-speed manual transmission, rack-and-pinion steering, and stiffened springs. The results were performance that no sporting driver could possibly complain about: 0 60 mph in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph. -RM Sothebys This Rootes Group Sunbeam Tiger has remained in the same family ownership for the past 35 years. Considered a Mk 1A which were originally manufactured with the Ford built 260 cubic inch motor, this Tiger has gone through the popular update of installing the Ford 289 cubic inch V-8 which was standard on the Mk 11s. Sitting on top of the 289 cubic inch motor is a Holley 4-barrell carburetor with an Edelbrock aluminum intake topped off with a chrome AC air cleaner. Cooling for this Tiger is provided by an aftermarket Racing Concepts aluminum radiator. To finish off the look of the V-8, finned Tiger Powered by Ford valve covers have been installed. Once you turn the key and listen for the electric fuel pump this Tiger comes to a quick start and performs very well. The V-8 motor is mated to an upgraded 5-speed transmission in place of the factory 4-speed. The interior presents well from the black upholstered seats to the iconic wood steering wheel, burl wood dash and Jaeger gauges. The soft top has never known to be up on this car. Because of this it has shrunk and can not be latched. It also has a small hole above the rearview window. If driving with the top up is your style this Sunbeam will require a new one. The Embassy Black paint that is twenty plus years old presents very well and is accented by the LAT style fiberglass hood and aluminum bolt on mag wheels. Under close inspection solvent pop can be seen scattered throughout the paint, specifically on the lower panels. (seen in attached photos) There are additional parts which will come along with the sale of this Tiger, namely an original Mk 11 steel hood and a 260 cubic inch block which will require rebuilding. If you are prone to like the British styling but looking for American muscle power the Rootes Sunbeam Tiger is the correct choice.
