Classic Car Overview

1967 Porsche 912, 5-Speed
Restored, California Sunroof Car

For sale: A rare sunroof-equipped 1967 Porsche 912. Originally sold in November 1966 in New York, the cars first owner kept it for only three months before being drafted and selling it to the current owner. Shortly after acquiring the vehicle, the second owner relocated to California in 1969. This exceptional 912 showcases a blend of originality and restoration, accompanied by a remarkable 165-page collection of records dating back to 1975. Sadly, earlier records were lost in a fire.

From 2007 to 2008, the car underwent an extensive exterior restoration by Martin Hveem Automobile Restorations in Red Bluff, approximately 7,000 miles ago. The Golfblau paint boasts a deep, stunning shine, with the car meticulously disassembled and properly prepped for painting. Much of the original trim was preserved and reinstalled, including the factory Sekurit side and rear glass, chrome, lenses, and other details. The overall presentation is impressive.

The car rides on OEM steel wheels fitted with 165-SR15 Michelin radials, though the tires should be replaced due to their age. In addition to the superb paint and bodywork, the floors were replaced earlier in 2001 by Gary Crandell Auto Restoration and Welding in Concord, California. Photos documenting the restoration process are available for review.

The owner reports that the 1.6-liter flat-four engine was replaced in the early 1970s. It runs well, delivering strong performance, and was recently serviced at 34,059 miles. The service included a courtesy inspection, oil change, timing adjustment, carburetor adjustment, front wheel bearing adjustment, new spark plugs, and more. The engine starts easily and runs smoothly, with shifting feeling precise and suspension and braking systems performing tightly. Records show it was last operational when I first saw the car in late October of 2024. We will take a look at this.

The interior remains largely original and remarkably well-preserved, with the seats, door panels, door cards, steering wheel, carpets, dash, and gauges all intact. Apart from the nonfunctional odometer and the expectedly inoperative clock, the rest of the systems are in good working order, making the car quite comfortable. However, please note that the factory power sunroof is currently not operational.

This is a fantastic opportunity to own a lovely, well-cared-for vintage Porsche 912 in the rarest configuration. It has been a California car for most of its life and has a short owners list!
